Posted - Aug 13 2014 : 09:48:51 AM I am having a problem keeping my OS , XP up and running when using Atmel Studio 6.2 with Visual Assist enabled.
Any attempt to edit a text will immediately crash the XP as if someone have pulled the AC plug.
I have went thru several uninstalls / installs of Atmel Studio, even clean XP install with same results.
But the main issue is that Visual Micro customer service acknowledged that this problem exist with Visual Assist in JANUARY 14, 2014. There is a uncompleted ticket on record on that on Visual Micro site.
Today I did install a trial copy of Visual Assist and having exactly same issue.
I just do not understand what can be wrong with my XP, which apparently is the only one with this problem and WHY the OS crashes. It would make more sense if Atmel Studio crash , but OS crash is just too much to swallow.
ATmel Studio 6.2 with Visual Assist is the ONLY app which crashes my XP - up to date SP3.
Please help.
PS ATmel Studio 6.2 oficaly uses Visual Studio 10.0 "Isolated" - whatever that means. I have no OTHER Visual Studio versions installed on my PC. I do not use Visual Studio any version.

Posted - Aug 18 2014 : 12:58:40 PM Given Microsoft have stopped patching WinXP, moving to Windows 7 or Windows 8 makes sense, but it is several hours work. If you do decide to do this, can you please see if Atmel works correctly with VA enabled before installing Visual Micro, or any other tool that sits on top of Atmel? I want to know if the problems show up before introducing this program, since simply having it installed might be a factor.
I still don't understand why the debugging is not working either, the Atmel installer should install all required components. |

Posted - Aug 16 2014 : 7:48:34 PM ATmel 6.2 and yes it was repaired several times.
I guess I need to install Windows 7.1 and use real WndDbg.

Posted - Aug 16 2014 : 4:38:11 PM Which version of Atmel studio are you using? I have versions 6.0 and 6.1 installed for testing.
Have you tried repairing your Atmel install? Atmel uses a core version of Visual Studio 2010, VS2010 provides the editor, but not the compiler. So the problem with attaching the debugger may be related to how you installed Atmel. |

Posted - Aug 15 2014 : 10:08:55 PM I am running ATmel Studio as editor.No other program.
Please note that I have managed to activate a debug program within ATmel STudio ( Attach to process) and when given option to actually do the debugging I have received a message that Visual Studio 10 needs to be reinstalled. You have stated that Visual Studio 10 is used by Visual Assist and apparently is running VA OK. So why does ATmel STudio needs another copy of SAME program? Do you know what version / release / SP did ATmel used when incorporating VA ? Maybe that needs to be updated via MS.
It sure looks as some MS supporting application is either wrong version or plain missing for VA to FULLY work. BTW I can edit real Arduino application in ATmel STudio AS LONG AS VA IS DISABLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No crash than!!!!
SO whatever VA does when editing in ATmel Studio causes OS to crash.

Posted - Aug 14 2014 : 11:35:16 PM What program are you using to do the editing?
You have spoken about VC6, Atmel, Visual Micro and Arduino, this is 4 different programs, unless some of these programs have more than one name. |

Posted - Aug 14 2014 : 9:52:24 PM It still crashes. I am NOT running any programs, just load some sample c or h file and try to edit it. I am now capturing windows dump, but I do not know how to interpret it. It basically runs 7F which is "stop". Would it help if I send the Windows dump file to you? I am basically giving up to ever find out what is causing this. I see no point using ATmel Studio without Visual Assist since plain Arduino IDE does not have any way to debug it.

Posted - Aug 14 2014 : 4:56:50 PM Atmel have arranged to ship their tool with VA installed. They ship a slightly customised version of VA, and their editor / IDE is based around part of Microsoft's Visual Studio 2010. The difference between editor and IDE really does not matter here.
So if you download and install VA, it won't be aware of Atmel, since it is not one of the standard IDE's we support directly. Which explains what you saw when you ran the VA installer. VC6 is a pre VS2010 IDE, which is why you had this option ticked.
If you are still seeing these crashes, which program are you loading and using when the crash happens? Which version of this program are you using? |

Posted - Aug 14 2014 : 09:25:53 AM No "IDE" , just using ATmel as editor. I load ARduino sketch sample try to edit it. No Arduio IDE!
I noted when I downloaded the VA trial it asked for what Visual STudio I am using. The only option was "pre 2010" and unfortunately I do not recall if I selected it or not. But VA works on my VC6.0 which I am currently not using , trying for Arduino! Other thing to note - at one point VA was an option installable by ATmel "extension manager", now it is installed DURING ATmel install. Rumor has it that some display functions in VA are done by DIFFERENT Visual STudio.
Again officialy ATmel installs ONLY Visual Studio 2010 (Isolated) It sure looks as ATmel install is missing something. I would be curious how ATmel handles VA licensing. I had some issues unistalling VA trial before due to licensing. Something to look into, I guess. I'll keep in touch.
Almost forgot - I did full clean XP install, starting with drive formatting and downloading all 150 plus XP updates.
When ATmel starts 2010 load it goes thru ton of MS stuff on clean mashine.

Posted - Aug 13 2014 : 11:18:11 PM Which IDE are you now using?
How did you remove VisualMicro / Arduino? Did you format your system and start over, or just uninstall things?
Since you are seeing the VA parsing messages, VA is obviously installed and active.
Changing the keyboard seems to rule out any problems with the keyboard software. From memory, when I have seen problems, it was with old versions of the software for a couple of Logitech keyboards. Very rare, but worth checking just in case. |

Posted - Aug 13 2014 : 7:31:42 PM I did disconnect the wireless USB plug and used PS2 keyboard. Same crash, but it seems slower. With wireless as soon as I type "i" as in "int" it goes. On PS2 it takes "int" before it crashes.
The VisualMicro is a "wrapper" for original Arduino IDE. To be honest I have no clue what is its function. I don't think it can be used as standalone development tool. It may need other Visual Studio reditrubutable.
The strangest thing - when I first loaded ATmel STudio 6.1 it ALL worked including VA. Than it quit and after few uninstall / install I have given up.
I have no VisualMicro / Arduino IDE installed right now, it just crashes with plain editing on C code.
PS When I start ATmel Studio I can see VA "parsing" , so it is alive, just won't let me edit.
I AM Still working on WndDbg ( Windows 7 SDK )

Posted - Aug 13 2014 : 4:06:01 PM Is VisualMicro related to Atmel? I don't recognise VisualMicro off hand. What is this? Another IDE plugin?
Microsoft mouse and keyboard should not be a problem, but it might be worth checking to see if you have the latest mouse and keyboard drivers, which should be checkable via Windows Update. |

Posted - Aug 13 2014 : 12:49:33 PM Sorry the bitmap is on the other OS drive , I got three , so I need to restart again Grrrr |

Posted - Aug 13 2014 : 12:48:00 PM I am not sure if VisualMicro is interested in resolving this. I'll send you the bitmap of the January ticket. Of course you are free to take any action you want on this. FYI After I installed the trial version of VA I have no issues running VA on VC 6.0. I am trying to find if window debug (WndDbg - not sure ) will tell anything when Studio crashes. I do use MS wireless keyboard and mouse, but I have a PS2 keyboard I could try to see if it behaves differently. My "problem" is I am getting tired of restarting OS each time. Thanks for you help, I'll keep in touch.

Posted - Aug 13 2014 : 12:31:03 PM Apologies for this, clearly this should not be happening.
Atmel Studio already has Visual Assist installed, so you should not need to install a trial version of VA.
Do you have a link for the ticket on the Visual Micro site? I am not aware of this bug, and I cannot remember anyone else reporting anything quite like this.
Are you working on your computer directly, or are you connecting via Remote Desktop? We have had occasional reports of crashes under remote desktop.
What sort of mouse and keyboard are you using? I have seen a few reports of specific mouse or keyboard drivers, included with 3rd party mouse and keyboards, causing problems. |
