I'm running VA_X with VS2005 and was having performance problems with the default intellisense so i disabled that by renaming feacp.dll as discussed here: http://forum.wholetomato.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4308
But now when i hover over a symbol, nothing appears. The hovering class browser is working fine, as are the context and definition fields but tooltips just don't appear.

We can reproduce the behavior you see. It appears to be side effect of renaming feacp.dll to get rid of default Intellisense. It's not a problem specific to VA X, though you might like us to create tooltips even when the dll does not exist.
You might try the other option described in the thread you mention, i.e. that related to NCB files. It's the only other way our users have discussed to eliminate overhead of default Intellisense.

Finally, if you live without tooltips, you still have the Context and Defintions fields, as well as the HCB. |

Is the option to "Enable Automatic Quick Info tooltips" enabled in:
Tools|Options|Text Editor|C/C++|Formatting |
