Posted - May 04 2006 : 12:05:16 AM I always thought this was "by design," since without thorough parsing, you can't tell whether this is a variable declaration with initialization or a function declaration.
If you are within the scope of a method, once you type the semicolon, it is obvious that this is a variable declaration/initialization, but until that point, and whenever you are outside the scope of a method, this could be either.
Wonder what the standard has to say about this....
(Note that my reference point is C++)
