I'm developing a VS 2005 project with C#, and when I have VAX turned on, my intellisense window appears for about a second before going away. If I can click on the scroll bar quickly enough, it will stay around, but that seems to be the only way. Has anyone else seen this? Any workarounds? As it is, I have to turn of VAX to be productive (I'm working with an unfamiliar object model, and use intellisense a lot right now).

Thanks,
damon

i have come across forum posts at codeproject that mention problems using a USB keyboard before, from vague memory someone had serious stability problems with either MS Office or the OS on a server OS. it seems to have something to do with the drivers in windows.

but i agree, hardly the first thing you would think of.

Do I hear the music to "The Twilight Zone?"

This is really weird.

Solved (I think).

I had tried everything I could think of: restarting the IDE, upgrading to the newest beta, rebooting the machine, starting a new project, tweaking IDE settings, etc, and nothing worked. I just switched keyboards, and the problem went away. The old keyboard plugged into the USB port, while the new one plugs into the PS/2 port.

Anyway, it works for me now. Maybe this will help you isolate what is going on.

Thanks for all the help!!

Hmmm. I don't think there is anything on here that should be affecting it. VAX is my only VS add-in. I am using the Infragistics toolset, but I find the same problem in new default projects.

The only other guy here that uses VA isn't having any problems, though he is using an earlier version. I wasn't having problems when I was using an earlier version (don't remember which one, but it would have been the latest version available to me before I renewed my license if you have access to that data).

This is the only machine I have here, so I can't do a comparison. I looked for NCB files, but there weren't any. Are there cases where C# projects generate them?

I'm guessing something must be grabbing focus a fraction of a second after the list is displayed, but can't think of what that might be.

so far no luck in reproducing this.

* do you have any utilities / programs running that might be a factor? if this is machine specific this may be the problem.
* do you see this on any other machines?
* does anyone else where you work use VA? if so do they get this problem?

what happens if you create a new, default C# project?
can you try deleting any ncb files you have? this is a long shot, but will not hurt, they are re-generated by the IDE.

Has anyone at Whole Tomato been able to repro this? Any sense of what it might be or a possible workaround?

Sorry, I was out of town for the week. I had all but "get content from default intellisense" checked. I unchecked them all, restarted the IDE, and the problem is the same. Thanks for the idea, though.

do you have any, or all, of these settings turned on:

VA Options -> Text Editor -> listboxes -> allow acronyms
VA Options -> Text Editor -> listboxes -> allow shorthand
VA Options -> Text Editor -> listboxes -> shrink when possible
VA Options -> Text Editor -> listboxes -> get content from default intellisense
VA Options -> Text Editor -> listboxes -> bold non-inherited members
VA Options -> Text Editor -> listboxes -> list non-inherited entries first

does turning all of them off make any difference to anything?

This is the box that pops up when G??.G?? is pressed after a variable of type:

public partial class AC_CA_LISTRow : System.Data.DataRow

I sent a screen shot to the support email address referencing this forum thread.

Thanks!

you can use imageshack.us to upload an image and post it here. Or you can email the information to [email protected]

I don't see how to post a screen shot here. It happens with I hit '.' after a variable. The list of available methods and properties comes up for a second at most, then disappears. For example, I type

MessageBox.

After I type '.', the box with Equals, ReferenceEquals, and Show pops up for a moment, then goes away.

I tried disabling the completion as you suggested, but that didn't change the behavior.

Thanks,
damon

We'd like to fix the problem but we can't yet reproduce it. Intellisense listboxes work as we expect in C#.

Do you have "show completion list after every character" enabled in Tools|Options|Text Editor|C#|Intellisense? If so, try disabling it so you see the suggestion lists for VA X. (A side effect might the avoiding of disappearing lists.)

Otherwise...

Can you describe which listboxes appear and disappear? Do they have question mark icons? Open after you type a few letters? Open after you type a dot?

Send or post a small screenshot just before the listbox disappears (or at least of where it opened.)

Thanks for the link! I downloaded the latest beta, but unfortunately the problem still exists with C# intellisense. :(

Can this fix be added to a build in the near future? I turn VAX off altogether now.

Thanks,
damon

Nope, VAX is the only installed add-in.
support Posted - Jun 22 2006 : 11:24:46 AM
Do you have any other add-ins installed? Check "Tools|Addin Manager." If so, disable at startup and restart your IDE. See if you have a conflict.

We recall this problem coming up for someone else but we can't find its case. We're just not searching our forums for the right terms. Maybe someone else has better luck.
