When I try to start/open a project in Visual Studio 2005 with VAssistX on, it freezes. When I turn XAssistX off, Visual Studio no longer crashes. Might anyone here know why its causing the freeze?

Do you have any other add-ins? If so, try disabling them "at startup" and restarting your IDE.

Did it ever work?
Which build of VAX are you using?
Does this occur with all projects, or just one (or two or three...)?
How about a newly created project using one of the AppWizards?
