I just encountered a problem in VA (build 1446 under VC6 SP5) where the option to rebuild the symbol database was apparently not working.
In the end I have seen that the program I had previously started from my IDE held a lot of files from VA open. I have here a little excerpt I generated with Process Explorer:
File C:\\Programme\\Visual Assist X\\vc6\\cache\\prog_empty_8040.idx
File C:\\Programme\\Visual Assist X\\vc6\\cache\\prog_empty_8040.va
File C:\\Programme\\Visual Assist X\\vc6\\cache\\prog_empty_8040.va
File C:\\Programme\\Visual Assist X\\vc6\\cache\\prog_empty_8040_.tmp
File C:\\Programme\\Visual Assist X\\vc6\\cache\\prog_empty_8040A.tmp
File C:\\Programme\\Visual Assist X\\vc6\\VaCPP.idx
File C:\\Programme\\Visual Assist X\\vc6\\VaCPP.va
File C:\\Programme\\Visual Assist X\\vc6\\VaCPP.va
File C:\\Programme\\Visual Assist X\\vc6\\VaCPP_.tmp
I guess that this caused the rebuild option to fail.
Perhaps you should open your files with the respective flags to aviod inheriting the handles to spawned processes.
