I have enhance coloring on, highlight-all on, but no highlighting occurs when I search for a reference. My background is black. Should highlighting still work?

You may find that you can change it back again. It sounds like a settings problem, I ran into a very similar problem myself, but for me opening and closing the IDE options dialog was enough.

The background color was set to be slightly less than black, changing it to black fixed the problem. Strange.

I did it in the color scheme of the IDE, under Tools->Options Environment->Fonts/Colors.

How have you set the background to be black? Did you change the global windows colour scheme, or did you change only the colour scheme in the IDE?

In VS2005, I opened and closed the Tools->Options dialog... it doesn't appear to have fixed anything.

Can you try opening the IDE options dialog, and then closing it again. When you do this VA will update its settings, and this should fix the colouring problem.

I have 1540. I click on a variable and hit alt-a,t,f. The reference window comes up and highlight-all is checked.

How do you search for a reference?

What build of VA X? If not 1540, you might as well install it before we ask you to do it.
