When upgrading to the latest version (1544), I get the following error on Vis Studio startup:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Add-in 'Visual Assist X' failed to load or caused an exception.
Would you like to remove this Add-in?
...
Error Message: <Unknown>
Error number: 800a0030

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Uninstalling and reinstalling an older, previously-working version does _not_ fix the problem.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Installing SP1 for Visual Studio 2003 resolved this issue for me.

Thanks ;-) Everything seems working well now.

I'll leave the "format c:" option for next time...although I hadn't been far from that (together with complete disk restore from "before the update" backup).

Cheers.

That was / is a lot of work! I just hope that VA continues to work reliably for you!

Uninstalling VS2005 its self should not have caused any problems, but I do recall some of the release notes that came with Beta releases of VS2005. From memory the recommended uninstall method was "format c:", so if you ever had an IDE beta installed that might well have caused problems.

Hi feline,

I have finally succeeded with complete reinstall - uninstalled visual studio, uninstalled Visual Assist, searched the registry and deleted all references to whole tomato, Visual Studio in both KHLM and HKCU, reinstalled Visual Studio and Visual Assist - and finaly, it seems to work! ;-)) Hurra. (hopefully it will servive the VS.NET SP1 reinstall, MSDN reinstall etc.)

I must admit, that my working environment is completely ruined, source control gone, user customization gone :) Hmm, pretty painfull experince (during the process I also reinstalled .NET Framework, which caused my ATI drivers failure etc. )

When deleting the registry entries I've found out traces of already uninstalled VS.NET 2005, I don't know if it has any connection.

Cheers,
Lukas

Thanks feline for trying to help.

I have no other plugins listed in the "Add-in Manager". I am able to uninstall VA-X, everything disappears and VS.NET2003 works correctly and later reinstall, and still I am getting this error.

Protected Storage service is running.

SourceOffsite is source control provider, probably something else. However, this is keep happening even when I uninstalled SourceOffsite.

Uninstalled VS.NET and reinstalled - did not help either.

Uninstalling/reinstalling VA dll's with regsvr32 and regsvr32 /u produced no errors, only during regsvr32 va_x.dll I was asked to reset Visual Studio settings, replied YES.

I have the log files, thank you for these. However so far I am not seeing any obvious clues in any of these files.

Can you look in the dialog:

IDE tools menu -> Add-in Manager -> list of available add-ins

and see if anything other than Visual Assist X is listed? I am wondering if SourceOffsite has installed some form of IDE plugin. I don't recognise this program personally.

When you registered the VA dll's did you get any error messages, or did everything work correctly?
lukor Posted - Aug 20 2007 : 05:46:23 AM
Hello,

I also have the same error (after installing the 1559 version), reinstalling Visual Assist, either the latest or any previous version did not help. Repair installation of Visual Studio 2003 or the VS SP 1 did not help either.

I don't have any other plugin installed (just SourceOffsite as the source control provider).

My about box in VS.NET 2003 says:
Microsoft Visual C++ .NET
Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 Service Pack 1 (KB918007)
Visual Assist X

I have tried re-registering all visual assist DLLs with regsvr32, but still no luck.

I am sending the va.log and vassist.log via the support form, startup.log was not created.

Thanks for help,
lukas.

For what its worth you do get your very own FAQ entry

http://docs.wholetomato.com?W295

The plugin framework, I try to stay away from that, but I have heard it described as "challenging"
turkeypotpie Posted - Jan 31 2007 : 6:30:34 PM
Cool, thanks guys for walking me through this. It would seem to me that the Visual Studio plugin framework doesn't do such a great job at isolating.

At a wild guess the VSLua plugin did not properly uninstall its self *sigh*

I am glad you have VA fixed and working.

It is possible uninstalling VSLua followed by a repair of the IDE would help, but I honestly do not know if this would help or not.

empty

Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET AAP50-GS00000-U7000RN
DirectX extensions for Visual Studio
Microsoft Application Center Test
Visual Assist X
Ideat Solutions Ref++

Ok, so that jogged my memory. About a month ago, I tried out a plugin called VSLua, a lua editor and debugger, and deciding it was too buggy, I uninstalled it a few days later. Well, lo and behold, it's a lot buggier than I thought. If I reinstall it, then I can run VAssistX without problems. All I can really say at this point is, "wtf!?".

According to the history, my last update was a lengthy 1.5 years ago.

Yes

If you go to Windows Update, there is an option in the left column to "Review your update history"

When you installed VA, did you allow it to reset the IDE?
turkeypotpie Posted - Jan 31 2007 : 5:36:39 PM
>> Did you install or update anything else at the time that you updated VA?
I last did a VA update about 1.5 months ago. I have installed some new things in that time, but haven't really kept track of them. Does window have a global install log that I don't know about?

>> The error number pops up in the following places - are any obviously relevant to changes made recently on your system?
None of those really ring a bell with any changes I've made. I'm also not much a VB guy nor a COM guy, so it's hard for me to interpret the relevance of those links.

>> Do you have any IDE macros that run automatically?
No

Did you install or update anything else at the time that you updated VA?

The error number pops up in the following places - are any obviously relevant to changes made recently on your system?

Do you have any IDE macros that run automatically?
turkeypotpie Posted - Jan 31 2007 : 4:34:57 PM
IDE: vc7.1
OS: win xp
feline Posted - Jan 31 2007 : 4:30:11 PM
I have the log files, thank you for these. I have asked the developers to see if they have any ideas.

case=4843

Which IDE and OS are you using?
The permissions question mainly applies to Vista, where the IDE often runs without administrator privileges, so this can result in VA not having permissions to write to its own installation directory.
turkeypotpie Posted - Jan 31 2007 : 3:26:36 PM
>> Do you have any other addin's installed?
Yes, but I tried disabling them.

>> Are you running as the administrator on your computer?
I have administrative rights.

>> Did you run the VA install with admin rights?
Yes

>> Does VA have full control of its installation directory?
Well, I do. I can blow away the install dir and start over. But it doesn't fix the problem.

I've submitted the log files to your contact page. Hopefully that'll tell you something.

Do you have any other addin's installed?
Are you running as the administrator on your computer?
Did you run the VA install with admin rights?
Does VA have full control of its installation directory?

I would not expect lack or rights to cause a problem like this, but it might be a factor.

If none of that helps can you please close the IDE, then enable VA logging by running regedit and setting the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Whole Tomato\\Logging = 1

Now when you run VA it will generate the files:

c:\\va.log
c:\\vassist.log
c:\\Program Files\\Visual Assist X\\Startup.log

can you please zip these files up and submit them via the form:

http://www.wholetomato.com/support/contact.asp

including this thread ID or URL in the description, so we can match it up.

Hopefully this will give us some clues as to the problem.

No luck with these ...

Regarding:
http://docs.wholetomato.com?W290
... I can run the regsvr32 command without an error

Regarding:
http://docs.wholetomato.com?W297
... The protected storage service is already running as described.

Regarding:
http://docs.wholetomato.com?W292
... I do have cvsnt installed on my system, but don't seem to have u3dapi10.dll installed anywhere, according to an indexed search on my machine. And my install isn't hanging either.

feline Posted - Jan 31 2007 : 12:02:23 PM
Can you try this two FAQ's please, and see if either of them help:

http://docs.wholetomato.com?W290

http://docs.wholetomato.com?W297

Do you have CVSNT installed? That can cause a problem with the installer its self, but this does not sound like that problem, described here:

http://docs.wholetomato.com?W292

I tried disabling my other addins, as suggested on a previous forum thread. No luck.
