GUI lock permanently when "Search in files..." starts when VA reads solution information.
To repeat: open big solution (many subprojects)
quickly open "search in files..." and start searching when status line still reads "VA: reading project info..."

How long do you see this message "VA: reading project info..." on the status bar for?
I have found a VS2005 project holding over 50 projects and over 3,000 code files, but I am not seeing any sign of this status bar message.
I have a smaller VS2003 project, and again no sign of this status bar message. |

this case was 50 projects, about 4,000 files, VC++ 2003 Standard with SP1 |

Approximately how many projects and files are there in this solution?
Which IDE are you using?
I have just tried this with a solution holding 1 project and 9,000 files, and I am not seeing any problems. I triggered "find in files" as soon as VS2005 would let me, but that was a while, since the IDE went into over drive when it tried to open the solution. |
