Hello,

I've installed the latest Visual Assist X version (10.4.1619) with Visual Studio 2005 (SP1) and I'm occuring a strange bug.
Sometimes I have the situation that the IDE hangs at startup... The complete GUI is freezed and after some time clicking I get the typical WER dialog telling me that the application hangs.
I've looked at the callstacks of all running threads of devenv.exe but nothing seems to be wrong.
If I get this (relatively rare) bug it will appear at every further startup. Only the deinstallation of Visual Assist X helps to get a working IDE again.

If I reinstall Visual Assist now and start the IDE the first time the welcome dialog appears and I'm prompted to re-register. I enter my license code and close the welcome dialog (now the IDE usable till I close it again).

I can solve the bug nearly every time if I restart my computer and reinstall Visual Assist, strange?.

Do you need some further feedback to solve this issue?

Don't know, I've resetted the window layout, closed the ide and afterwards deleted the registry key. Then started the IDE and the VA Outline window appeared.

Well I've uninstalled VS2005 now and installed VS2008 and VA -> No problems so far even if I import the old settings...
That doesnt fix this strange bug... but well... I got rid of it ;)

Most odd, I have just double checked here, and VA is quite happy on my machine with no visible windows on startup.

I wonder if installing VS2008 will make any difference. I recall one recent report where installing a second IDE fixed a strange problem. Fixed is good, but it is not obvious to me why installing a second IDE would have helped.

Remember you will need to reinstall VA after installing VS2008 so that VA can register its self with this IDE.

If you want to go back to your original user deleting the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Whole Tomato\
and all of its children *might* fix the problem. If you do this you will have to re-enter your VA license key when you next load the IDE.

Indeed it fixes the problem... I've noticed that the VA Outline and VA View windows are now visible at startup...
If I disable the Tip of the day and let VA Outline and VA View visible the IDE starts without problems.. (there is even no 2-3 sec delay at startup). Now I close the VA Outline window and restart the IDE -> hung.

Well I'll let the VA Outline window now visible as a hack (till I install VS2008 today... but its a really strange bug... VA seems to need a visible window at startup to work properly on my pc ;-).

Another option may be to "Reset Window Layout" in the IDE (Tools|Options|Environment|General) since those are settings which are not stored in the registry.

I have your settings, thank you for that. I have imported all of these settings into a Vista Business 64bit machine with VS2005 and VA 1619.

I must have reloaded the IDE 30 times, if not more, with various combinations of tip of the day and the IDE's start up set to different things, and no problems, no crashes. Everything is fine.

At a wild guess the corrupt setting did not get exported properly.

If you want to go back to your original user deleting the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Whole Tomato\
and all of its children *might* fix the problem. If you do this you will have to re-enter your VA license key when you next load the IDE.

The problem you are seeing sounds like a corrupt or broken setting, so lets see if I can reproduce it here.

Seems to be correct, I've created a new user and started visual studio (visual assist registered, no tip of the day dialog...) and it works.

Which OS are you using? The VA install directory setting suggests a 64bit OS.

Windows Vista Ultimate x64

Automatically check for new version was turned on -> turning it off doesnt make any difference.

Do you have either of:

VA Options -> Startup -> Automatically check for new version
VA Options -> Startup -> Also check for new beta version

turned on? If this is turned on can you try turning it off, and see if this makes any difference?

Can you please export your VA settings and send them to me:

VA Options -> Performance -> Export Settings

Please submit the files via the form:

I've tried to modify the "At startup" value... here the results (with: ShowTipOfTheDay = "No")

Open Home Page (first try):

No, only Visual Assist X.

Do you have any other plugin's installed?

Well I mean the "Tip of the Day"-Dialog.

I enabled/disabled it at "HKCU\\Software\\Whole Tomato\\Visual Assist X" RegValue: "ShowTipOfTheDay"

Sounds for me like a timing issue? Well... just speculating ;)
sean Posted - Nov 27 2007 : 11:08:05 AM
Which Welcome Dialog is this - where is it enabled/disabled?
zensox Posted - Nov 27 2007 : 09:15:56 AM
Some further note:

I've discovered that this bug ONLY occurs if I've disabled the Welcome Dialog.
If I modify "ShowTipOfTheDay" in the registry the IDE only hangs if ShowTipOfTheDay is "No".

If I set "ShowTipOfTheDay" to "Yes" the IDE takes some time.. the StatusBar writes "Initializing Toolbox" and then the Welcome Dialog appears. If I click Close the IDE is normally usable.
