vax doesn't work, but only in a specific dir?

torg	Posted - Jan 14 2008 : 6:45:33 PM What could block the context and definition bar from showing up and the open corresponding file toolbar button to be greyed out? But only when the project is in a specific folder? We've recently switched from AlienBrain to Perforce at my work and now, any project I create (source controlled or not) under my perforce workspace root (c:\\p4v) will not work in visual assist. But if I create a new project under c:\\temp or something instead it works just fine. Any help would be appreciated. feline	Posted - Jul 22 2009 : 5:47:36 PM Approximately how large is this file? The number of lines, or preferably the file size. If the file is very large it might be so large that VA is ignoring it. If VA was excluding the file due to its path then all of the files in this directory should be effected.
Alexo	Posted - Jul 22 2009 : 5:06:29 PM I am having a similar issue but so far it seems that only a single file is affected. The file path is: c:\\Work\\Root\\dbm\\dbd\\dbdobject.h The other files in that directory parse OK.

feline	Posted - Jan 25 2008 : 07:56:38 AM Many apologies for the delay in getting back to you about this. It turns out this is actually by design. Various perforce applications use ...\\p4v\\ and ...\\p4win\\ directories to display previous versions of files in read-only mode. VA ignores files in these directories so as not to break things like alt+g. The solution is to check out your files into a directory tree using a different name. The log file entry means that VA is rejecting / ignoring the file, due to the directory it lives in.

torg	Posted - Jan 17 2008 : 2:58:45 PM there's only a startup.log, no other log files are generated. in the c:\\p4v folder where open corresponding file is greyed out, I can execute "Find Symbol", but I get this error. --------------------------- Visual Assist X --------------------------- Please place the caret on a symbol before running Find References. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- I don't get that error in c:\\temp. And I'm doing it on the same BOOL, i.e. caret is placed where it should.

Can you please: * load the IDE, but do not load any solution * Then enable VA's logging * Then load one of the solutions in the C:\\p4v\\ directory tree * Let VA finish doing any parsing it might do - which probably won't take long * Now close the IDE - this stops the log files from getting to large Please see this FAQ for details of turning on VA's logging, and sending us the log files http://docs.wholetomato.com?W305 I am hoping the log files will offer some clues as to what is going on here.
torg	Posted - Jan 16 2008 : 4:13:11 PM yup, same session, VA starts and stops working depending on the root folder of my solution. simple directory, not mapped, substerd or anything to do with junction points. Anti-virus changed over to be McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5 a few months ago. Disabling it makes no difference. Reboot makes no difference. unplugging the network cable makes no difference. I've scanned through the registry and can't say I see anything suspect related to c:\\p4v folder.

You say the same session of msdev, so if you use File menu -> Close Solution and then open a different solution, all without closing the IDE, VA starts or stops working? I am just double checking what you mean. Is this a simple directory on your hard drive? Or is it some form of linked / mapped folder? Some form of file system junction point perhaps? Do you have any other IDE plugin's installed? What anti-virus software are you running? Any other type of scanning software, spyware scanner? I am wondering if this could be treating files in the Perforce directory tree differently. Is it easy to temporarily disable the anti-virus software, reload the IDE, and see if this makes any difference? Two more wild ideas. Can you try rebooting please. If a dead IDE process is running in the background and causing problems the reboot will get rid of it. Can you try unplugging your network cable and see if this makes any difference? That will disconnect you from the Perforce server. This should not matter, but you should not be having this problem either.

I'm editing .cpp and .h if I copy the working project from c:\\temp to c:\\p4v it doesn't work. If I copy from c:\\p4v to c:\\temp it does work. it's the weirdest thing, the same session of msdev will work flawlessly w/VA anywhere but in the c:\\p4v folder.

When you have this problem are you seeing any sign of VA syntax highlighting? No context and definition fields suggests VA thinks you are in a TXT, or some other unsupported type of file. If you copy one of these test projects from "C:\\temp\\" that works into the perforce directory tree does it still work?
