I am using 'miscellaneous files' in Solution Explorer
(this can be turned on... when you check'Visual Studio menu - Tools - Options - Documents - Show Miscellaneous files in Solution Explorer' checkbox.)

When i turn on this option, it works fine.
But, Terminate Visual Studio and execute again and repeat this over again (maybe twice), 'miscellaneouns files' folder will disppear.
(option checkbox has been unchecked automatically.)

And, when i uninstall visual assist x completely, 'miscellaneous files' option works very well.

it maybe... VAX would turn off that option.

Unfortunately no updates. VA is still disabling this option, since this is still the "best" solution we currently have. It is not ideal, but we feel that it is better than silently editing and possibly breaking code.

Hi, are there any updates on this issue? VAX 10.6.1833 still appears to be doing this to Visual Studio 2008.

thanks. I will try to change its permission.

The problem is that brackets being inserted into the wrong file is often very hard to spot. If this happens it can corrupt / break your code, especially if you do not know it happened.

Since we have been unable to find a reliable fix we had to do something to limit the damage.

You can stop VA changing this registry key by going into regedit and changing the permissions on the registry key in question. The setting is set via:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\VisualStudio\\8.0\\General\\ShowMiscellaneousFilesProject

If you go into advanced permissions add a Deny for "Set Value" this stops VA changing the key when you run the IDE. I have tested this here on a winXP system, and it works as expected, and I am not seeing any obvious problems.

Obviously this will stop you changing IDE options as freely as you would normally be able to do, but you can easily re-enable "Set Value" when you want to make an edit.

It's so ridiculous. Why VA X is turning off the option AUTOMATICALLY?
I agree that problem would be very serious, but it is not fair solution to turn off the option silently.
Although bracket insertion on the wrong file is terrible, it is very easy to notice and deal with.
And not most frequent for me.
So I still want to use 'misc files' in solution explorer.
please consider making VA X options about it, and do not turn off the option silently.

*checks* VA is turning off this IDE option. This is a work around, to stop characters being sent to the wrong file, which is a very serious problem. So far it is the only solution we have.

Ohhhh! The problem brackets are sometimes sent to the wrong file is related to 'show misc files' option. I didn't know.

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 SP1 on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP2, with VA X 1626.

1. I turn 'show misc files' option on, and shutdown IDE.
2. run IDE again. 'show misc files' works fine.
3. shutdown IDE again.
4. run IDE again. 'misc files' folder has gone away. and, 'show misc files' option has unchecked automatically.

When I uninstall VA X completely, above symptom is not appeared.
if more information required, ask me please.

We recommend turning off "Show Miscellaneous files in Solution Explorer"

There is a known problem where brackets are sometimes sent to the wrong file if this setting is turned on. This is actually an IDE bug, it is reporting the wrong file as the active file, and we are trying to find a reliable fix in VAX.

Having said that I don't recall anyone ever reporting that this option gets turned off. VA should not be effecting this option, and we have quite a few users who work with this turned on, and the option stays turned on for them.
