I recently updated VA, this problem did not occur previously. (the info states "VA_X.dll file version 10.5.1724.0 built 2009.05.01")

the parameter info intillisense tool tips come up white, when i type an '(' or hit CTRL-SHIFT-SPACE to bring it up. if i type a ',' the tooltip draws properly until it is dismissed; the next time it will start up blank again.

if i disable VA, the parameter info tooltips work properly, when i re-enable VA they come up white. This start after i updated VA.

I am using VS 2005, i haven't checked if this occurs in any other versions of VS.

Sorry, it looks like this thread was missed when the fix was released. Yes, this was fixed in build 1731.

Hi feline, is this fix included in 1731?

It seems to work so far, I haven't seen black tooltips since installing this version. Of course, I removed the "black tooltips" registry key before testing.

Hi feline, as you probably remember, I also have this "black tooltips" problem. I'd be willing to use the debug build to test it.

axo I have just emailed you via the forum about this, with a build of VA with extra logging.
axo Posted - Jul 08 2009 : 2:16:10 PM
It sounds like the same problem.. I've gone through all the steps described in the preceding posts - enabling/disabling highlight colours with no effect, and the problem goes away when I disable Visual Assist.

It happens on both monitors, but it is inconsistent - after I reboot, it might work for a lil while, then the tooltips blank out (sometimes white, sometimes black). The only consistency I discovered is once the problem starts, changing the display settings to 16 bit colour fixes it permanently on both monitors. Setting it back to 32 bit leads to blank tool tips on both monitors.

I'm using WinXP SP3, Visual studio 2005, and my video card is NVidia GeForce 8600 GT, with the latest drivers. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I also Remote Desktop into the machine once in a while. That may be a trigger for the issue, but I haven't verified it.
feline Posted - Jul 08 2009 : 1:08:47 PM
axo are you seeing blank tooltips only on a second monitor or on both monitors?
Are you always seeing this problem, or does it only show up after a while?

It is good to hear about this fix, I am just wondering if you are seeing the same problem as everyone else or a different one.
axo Posted - Jul 07 2009 : 3:52:53 PM
Hey all, thought this tid-bit might be helpful:

When I set the Colour Quality to 16-bit in Display properties, the problem goes away and tooltips are displayed properly (without restarting Visual Studio). When I set it back to 32-bit, the tooltips are black (or white) again.

raul and gammelby I have just emailed you via the forum about this, with a link to a test build. Hopefully the extra logging will give us some clues.
feline Posted - Jun 18 2009 : 5:00:21 PM
Thank you for checking this. We are going to try adding more logging, to try and find out what is going wrong. In the mean time, is anyone able to try rebooting their machine into safe mode and see if they still get this problem?

If the black tooltips take several hours to turn up this may not be very practical, but it would be very interesting to know if it made any difference. If it fixes the problem this would suggest some other process that is running on your machine is a factor.

Interestingly enough the problem has suddenly fixed it self; i don't know how or why, the only 'change' i made was installing some windows updates.

I will save the reg file in case it happens again.
raul Posted - Jun 18 2009 : 03:38:46 AM
This happens to me, also. I do have 2 monitors, but it does happen on both. I tried to all the things from this thread (tooltips coloring, registry setting) but the issue is still there.

I upgraded from 1724.

Hello again and sorry about the delayed follow-up. But please ignore all my apparent babbling about Vista animations and google desktop because the blank tooltip problem is back now - with all Vista animations disabled and no other applications running :-(. I tried installing the latest beta and applying the registry change, with no luck.

A few events that might be remotely related:

The problem appeared after undocking my laptop, attaching a projector using VGA, changing resolution because of that and then redocking and getting back into my 2 screen development setup. The latter process caused some problems where my primary monitor got stuck in the resolution used for the VGA projector and it required some fiddling with the resolution bar until I got back in the desired configuration (where the blank popup problem is now evident again (on both displays)).

My sysinfo is as follows:

Build 1727 has some preliminary changes for this problem. The changes are disabled by default. To enable the changes, exit all instances of Visual Studio, save the following as a registry script and run the saved script. Please let us know if these changes address the problem. Thanks.

Interesting, but I am not sure that is connected. We have to run around and repaint the screen after the IDE has finished painting it, so this might explain what you are seeing here.

Out of interest does closing the google desktop sidebar make any difference to this problem? It seems unlikely, but I don't remember anyone else mentioning they were running it, so I don't know how common it is among our users.
gammelby Posted - Jun 08 2009 : 2:45:10 PM
Nothing installed that specifically relates to transparency or animation. One tiny observation: I noticed that VS behaved quite strange when dragging the Google Desktop sidebar from one monitor to be docked on another (the one where VS was located). "Strange" means slow redraws and flickering.
feline Posted - Jun 08 2009 : 1:41:31 PM
We have a couple of users who have tooltip problems, but only when the tooltip is showing on the second monitor. Moving the IDE back to the primary monitor fixes the problem.

So I am wondering if the second monitor on your system is a factor or not.

Are you running any programs that might effect these animations and screen updates? For example WindowBlinds, or anything that is designed to make extra windows transparent? I have a Vista machine here with all of the default visual effects turned on, and I have never noticed an effect like this, but it only has one monitor.
gammelby Posted - Jun 08 2009 : 1:01:31 PM
Yep, I have two monitors connected. In fact, I thought I had fixed the issue by moving VS to the opposite monitor - but after a short while (after shuffling other apps between screens to get a mirror of my usual setup), the problem appeared again. I noticed some heavy flickering in a VA popup and tried to disable mentioned animations, which as described so far has fixed both the blank popup and the sudden flickering issue. Still no sign of the problems after a while and using my old monitor configuration. The mentioned flickering seemed like a re-population of a listbox that triggered the Vista-animation, that in turn triggered the re-population etc.
feline Posted - Jun 08 2009 : 12:08:16 PM
gammelby do you have more than one monitor on your computer?

I don't think anyone else has mentioned changing these settings having any effect, so this is a very interesting piece of news, thank you.
gammelby Posted - Jun 08 2009 : 09:59:58 AM
I also recently started noticing this problem - it started after the latest update as noted above, but more interestingly at about the time where I changed my Vista machine back to a more standard Vista-ish configuration for some client presentation. I have just tried to disable "annoying animations" under Accessibility Options and the problem went away while still using the latest VA version (I am not sure about the exact name in an English version of Vista - but try to search for "animation" under the Windows Control Panel).

Oh, just saw that you are using Windows XP... But maybe the above information might prove useful anyway.

I'm not running any utilities that have global effects.

Where should i send the files, i don't see an option to attach files to a post, and the e-mail poster option brings up a window without the option to attach a file.
feline Posted - May 29 2009 : 12:25:56 PM
Apologies, my mistake, I missed that.

Are you running any utilities or programs that might be effecting how tooltips are being drawn? WindowBlinds is an obvious example.

Can you please export your VA and IDE settings and send them to me:

VA Options -> Performance -> Export Settings
IDE tools menu -> Import and Export Settings -> Export selected environment settings

I can then import them here and see if I can reproduce the problem.
esoterik Posted - May 28 2009 : 1:45:03 PM
In my original post i mentioned that with VA disabled the tool tips come up properly.

Toggling tomato icons, and apply coloring doesn't change the behavior at all, in any combination; the tool tips still initially appear white.
feline Posted - May 28 2009 : 12:44:03 PM
It is good to know this is not a second monitor specific problem.

Can you try turning on:

VA Options -> Advanced -> Display -> use tomato icons in listboxes and tooltips to mark Visual Assist X content

and also try disabling VA via:

VAssistX -> Enable/Disable Visual Assist X

The first step is to try and confirm if the problem tooltips are coming from VA or from the IDE. With VA disabled what happens? With VA enabled and tomato icons enabled what happens?

Does turning:

VA Options -> Advanced -> Fonts and Colors -> Apply Colouring to -> Tooltips

on and off make any difference?
esoterik Posted - May 27 2009 : 10:03:08 PM
the version i was using before was installed from VA_X_Setup1715.exe

The tool tip problem occurs regardless of which monitor VS is on; though i usually only use VS on the primary monitor.
feline Posted - May 27 2009 : 6:51:03 PM
Do you remember which version you were using before?

Do you see this problem when the tooltip is on the main monitor, or does it only show up when the tooltip is on the second monitor? We have a few users who are seeing tooltip problems when the tooltip is on the second monitor, but so far we have been unable to find the bug.
