Posted - Mar 12 2010 : 2:04:46 PM Often when opening a new file, Visual Studio will become unresponsive for several minutes straight. This doesn't happen without Visual Assist enabled, and I don't have any other plugins installed.
Sometimes it happens every single time I open a file. Other times it doesn't happen very often. I am not sure what causes it to happen. There doesn't seem to be anything in the status bar that would indicate what is happening. The length of the pause seems to have been getting longer and longer over the weeks. Now it is just unbearable so I can't even use VA anymore.
So what is going on? How do I stop it from happening? This machine has 8 processor cores and 8 gigs of ram so I don't see why it is taking so long to do whatever it is doing. I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. |

Posted - Mar 15 2010 : 2:02:42 PM Apologies for the delay, sometimes it takes a day or two to reply, especially over the weekend.
Can you please download and run Process Monitor:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
set it to only show file system activity for the IDE process (devenv.exe). So use the filter "Process Name is devenv.exe".
While this is logging, please trigger the problem. Hopefully you will see a lot of activity somewhere, and this will give us some clues. If you don't see anything obvious can you try changing the filter to show file system activity for the file name you are opening, but any process.
If it is not VA / the IDE directly causing the problem, then it might be an interaction problem with anti-virus, or something like this. |

visual assist version 10.5.1738.0 built 2009.10.01
I don't see a CPU spike, but it does hammer on the disk drive while it is happening. |

Are you seeing any form of CPU spike when this happens on the IDE process? |
