I know it seems unlikely, but I recently updated from 1832 to 1836. Since then, I've had my OS lock up 3 times, which I've never seen before. The screen freezes, all input ceases, and apps halt (music stops, chat clients disconnect, etc).

Before I revert, I thought I'd see if there was anything y'all might suggest. Tends to happen when I during linking. I can see crashing if I run out of memory (not uncommon), but locking up the OS is new.

Very-very odd. First, can you please try rebuilding your symbol databases, on the off chance it helps:

VA Options -> Performance -> Rebuild symbol databases

Can you please try turn on logging? You can learn more on logging here:

It might help us to see what has happened before OS lockup. You can send the files via this form:

Anyway, I have a hunch that it might be an installation or download problem. So it may worth to try downloading Visual Assist again, uninstalling and then reinstalling it. If non of the above has helped, then it would be interesting to know whether the problem cease if you disable VA via the extension manager or you install 1832 again.
(You can disable or uninstall via the extension manager:
Tools -> Extension Manager...)
