When the user starts to search for references of a particular symbol and then before the search is over decides that that is not needed anymore (or partial search results are sufficient), he or she may close the search window. In this case search should be stopped to avoid wasting processor resources.

I don't see why would we need to keep running Find References in the background so I have put in a feature request to stop it on closing the window to see what the developers make of it:

I am used to this from other programs like Total Commander, which I have started to use much longer ago than VS :).

>used to stop search by closing the window.

You mean VA worked differently or you mean Visual Studio's find in files feature? I just tested and VS2010's find in files behaves the same way: it continues search in the background after closing the window.
To be honest I don't understand why it is better to proceed with searching, but at least VA is consistent with VS

I guess it's because I am used to stop search by closing the window. Somehow the intuition is that once it's not on the screen, it does not do anything anymore :). No, it does not happen too often, in fact, it happened only once and I just got this idea. :)

In current form, you can stop find references before closing the window.
If you forget to stop before you close the window, you can reopen it via

VAssistX -> Tools -> Find references results

so you can see the search results again and stop the search. Is the problem, you had described, happens to happen often?

This also prevents users from starting a new search for references before previous search is finished.
