This has taken me a while to narrow down.

Type in ( ) pairs as fast as you can, so that you end up with a line like this:

()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()

For just a millisec, as you are typing, do you see a small line appear between each pair, about half a line in height? I do...

Note that pasting () from the clipboard does not exhibit this problem - you have to type them in by hand.
