I do not like the new icons for files in MRU pane:
I would like to see the same icons as in FIW (as it used to be in previous versions):

Got my vote, they are visually too strong. |

We failed to note the icons represent sources of the entries in the MRU. A yellow folder implies an entry arrived in the MRU because it was picked from the FIW list. A text document because the file was opened. A text document with a pencil because it was modified.
The latter two appear if you Right+Click in the MRU and select one of the last two options in the menu. (One option implies the other.)
We like pencils in the icons because they tell us while files have been modified. The modified flags in this list do not clear when files are saved. Hence, after a save all and build, we still know which files we modified recently -- and we know which we should visit to fix a bug we just introduced.
Adding pencils to the traditional file icons, eg with C++ and H, got ugly quickly.
We still need a way to forget files were modified, since saving does not do it. Right now, "Clear All" from the Right+Click menu is the only way.
Perhaps we should replace the Folder icon with the one for the text document, ie forget about origin. |

While I can understand your line of thinking, I must argue that you are leaving the domain of VA with this idea. This is what source control is for. Which files have been recently modified and similar questions are easily answered with this tools. No need to re-introduce this with VA.
The original icons for the files are clean and clear, dont clutter the appearance of the window. |

Now I know why the icons have changed and I expect it to be an useful information. So for the time being I only ask to change the icon saying the file comes from FIW to a less distracting one. The current icon is just to eye catching. |

We agree the FIW icon in the MRU is obnoxious. We are considering a change. We will leave the icon for now and replace it when we make a few other mods. For example, we would like the pencil to be more prominent in the "modified" icons.
We are likely to implement "Make sticky" and "Clear non-sticky" options in the Right+Click menu of the MRU. Obviously, only the sticky entries would remain after you clear the non-sticky ones. This would let one keep a core set of files, and gather and clear related files periodically. We will need a "sticky" icon, or modifier like the pencil, when we make this happen.
Just in concept mode... More later. |
