I tried to install 1278 while .NET 2003 was running and got the expected 'Please shut down' message box. So, I shutdown the IDE.

But, I click the 'Retry' button long before the IDE actually shut down - but VAX accepted my 'Retry' and started the install! Hope nothing got screwed up...

Um, also I got the 'You must restart your computer' message box. Is there any way the install kit can *warn* me about this? If I had known a reboot was required, I wouldn't have started it right now. But I stuck now - I have to have the IDE, so I have to reboot.

Why *is* the reboot required, BTW?

Strange, I don't think I've ever had to restart my computer to install VAX. Certainly not to upgrade it.

My guess would be because you didn't wait for the IDE to completely shut down.

To the best of my knowledge, I've never had to reboot my machine after installing any version of VAX.

i installed 1278 earlier today, and no reboot was required. not giving the IDE time to quit sounds like a reasonable explanation. i always quit the VAX installer and start over after the IDE and excel have been closed, just to make sure.

Larry's point about it letting him start the installation before the IDE had fully shut down still stands.

I've had a situation where even after shutting down the IDE I still get the message and had to reboot to actually start the install. Does Excel also influence the VAX install? Just cos I saw it mentioned in this thread.

We believe Excel might load, at least occasionally, a DLL the IDE uses. Perhaps for Visual Basic extensions?? VA X does not touch any such DLLs, but the OS is not certain of the matter. Its solution is to require a reboot.

on my work machine if MS Excel 2000 is running, then the VAX installer reports that the IDE is running, even if it isn't. close Excel, and the warning about the IDE goes away.

If you get the 'must reboot' message, do the following:

Make sure VS really *is* shut.
Re-run the VA installation.

If you don't get the reboot message this time, you'll know that the appropriate file overwrites happened OK and you can re-start VS.

Morally, you should probably reboot before you file any complaints about VAX, but I've never found there to be any problem here.

I upgraded from 1298 to 1299. I had the IDE open, and the VAX install gave the 'Abort, Retry' message box. I shut down the IDE, clicked Retry, and the installation finished. At the end, it told me I had to reboot.

This is very annoying. I clicked Retry - the install kit should not proceed if there is still something running that will require a reboot. Please fix this.

The IDE was closed. No instance of Excel was running (I checked, because that's been mentioned before!)...
