Is it possible to trigger the rebuild of the symbol database from outside Visual Studio by deleting a file or modifying a registry key for example?

You can delete vaempty.va - this will cause VA to rebuild the symbol database the next time a workspace or solution is opened. The file is found (in typical installations) at c:\\program files\\visual assist\\vcN where N is 6, 7 or 8.
