I have had problems for a long time where VS would decide to lock up during loading. In each case I could delete the .suo file to cure the problem.

This was also the symptom when I tried SVN SCC (see other thread). At that time I had to delete both SVN SCC and VAX and then reinstall VAX to fix the problem.

I just now had the problem and deleting .suo didn't fix it. Deleting VAX fixed the problem. It not only loads now but loads much faster (I assume it is normal for VAX to slow down the load).

So now I suspect VAX has been causing this all along. This happened before I switched to vs 2005 so the problem isn't unique to the new beta VAX I am using. It happened with vs 2003 and the stable VAX also.

Has anyone else ever seen this problem? I don't run any other plug-ins with VAX.

have you reinstalled VA? can you get a call stack of this lockup?

can you set the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Whole Tomato\\Logging = 1

and reproduce? this should produce the files "C:\\va.log" and "C:\\VAssist.log"
can you do this, reproduce the lockup, zip and send these files to [email protected] referencing this thread.

logging gets disabled each time you quit the IDE, so if you cannot reproduce this lockup every time you will need to keep on re-setting this registry key.

I get the same problem. Happens on several different projects now. Is 100% repeatable on these projects but does not happen with build 1289, only with the latest build (1418). Log files are on their way :)

VA X seemed happy in the logs from peck797. We suspect a conflict with other add-ins, or a problem in the IDE itself (compounded with the presence of VA X) since peck797 said erasing the NCB gets rid of the problem. (VA X doesn't touch or read the ncb.)

I got around to reloading VAX. It ran ok for a few hours and then I got a lockup. I'm using vs2005 with no other add-ins. I recently installed vs2005 so it is fresh.

The lockup happened the first time I ran two copies of VS2005, but this may be a coincidence of course.

I've sent the logs as you requested.

Do you have a hyperthreaded system?

We have discovered 142x has problems when hyperthreading is enabled, e.g. hangs, spins, whacked coloring and whacked HCB. We are working on a fix.

Workarounds are to disable hyperthreading or revert to build 1418 in which the problems occur far less often.

I don't know how to set hyperhtreading on and off, but I am on a multi-cpu workstation. Would that cause the same problems?

i don't know for certain, but as an educated guess i would say yes. can you try 1418 and see if this helps?

I've moved totally to VS2005. Is 1418 compatible with VS2005?

I can live with this for now. I just need to avoid opening multiple copies of VS unless I really have to.

I switched back to 1418 two days ago and have not seen the problem since.
