Not sure what is the intended behaviour, but it is not consistent.
When I select chars inside a C string literal, press any of the opening bracket keys, VAX most of the times puts a bracket pair around the selection. Sometimes it does not. |

i have just tried this about 50 times on perhaps 10 different string and selections, every time the selected text was surrounded pressing either '{' or '('
when this fails, if you try again on the same selection does it work the next time? or do you have certain strings / selections inside strings that never select?
a case where this fails would be easier that a random problem. |

Certainly no definitive case. Seems rather random to me. My guess is that it happens when typing rather quickly and VAX is reparsing. I can try it 10 times at the same place and it will work 10 times, and fail at the next string. And the strings are really simple ones, no macros, no concatenations, etc. |

We can reproduce the problem inside and outside of strings, and you are correct in assuming it is related to timing.
Select a symbol or word and hold down ( until the (((())))'s get replaced with (((((('s.
