I saw other topics related to Tab handling with Copilot and VA but my issue is different.

If I have VA enabled and running then press Alt+/ to trigger the Copilot chat popup, focus stays in the editor and text is diverted from Copilot into the source code. Clicking in the copilot popup doesn't fix it either.

If I disable VA, this stops happening and Copilot works as expected. No need to pay for Copilot, you can recreate this with the free Copilot support MS offers.

Here's a screenshot.

Unfortunately this is currently a known bug, someone else reported this just before Christmas. So far it only effects VS2026, which is something, but no help if you have moved across:

case=166054

For me, using the window:

IDE View menu -> GitHub Copilot Chat

worked correctly, and didn't have this focus issue, with VA installed and active.

How are you disabling VA? Are you just using:

VAssistX -> Enable/Disable Visual Assist X

or are you doing something more? I ask, since for me simply disabling VA via the menu entry didn't fix the focus problem, so its possible an update to VS2026 has had an effect here.

Thanks for the reply and I'm glad it's a known bug. Looking forward to an update...

I did use View > GitHub Copilot Chat. It's not the same thing, of course, but is at least usable.

Disabling VA via the Enable/Disable menu item is not sufficient. I had to go into the VS Extension Manager and use Disable VA there and restart the IDE so that VA was not loaded at all.

Thank you for confirming that. These are the same results that I am seeing, so its useful to know that we are running into the same details.

We think we have a fix internally, and it should be in the next build, so long as everything goes according to plan.
