| I've been hitting an issue on freezing in VS 2026 upon loading my project workspace (mentioned in another thread). I determined VA was involved because when I disabled the extension, the issue went away. I've noticed twice now that after re-enabling the extension, it doesn't actually show in the extensions menu so I can't get to its settings. I also don't see things on the status bar from VA like I normally would when opening up a project. Disabling and re-enabling again doesn't seem to fix it. I have to re-run setup to get it back to appearing in the extensions menu. |

VA not loading after being disabled and then enabled in the manage extensions screen is currently a known problem:
case=166040
The fact that VA is somehow involved in the VS2026 freezes doesn't please me, but it does sort of make sense.
A mini dump of the frozen devenv.exe process would be interesting, and it might even help us to identify what is going on here, if that is possible.
When the IDE freezes, does it freeze just for a few seconds and then resume working again, or does it stay frozen and never resume?
Trying a test profile is another sensible step, since that might offer us some clues. It is possible VA is interacting with another extension, or something else in your default profile, in which case the test profile might help. Which edition of VS2026 are you using? The steps are slightly different for each edition, or I have a powershell script I can email you to help make setting up a test profile easier. |

Turns out we have encountered a hang on startup of VS2026, sometimes with Unreal Engine, and are working on a possible fix. But I don't know if that was the same problem as the one you are seeing or not. But for reference:

In insiders there seems to be a bug. To fix the problem run devenv.exe /Setup That fixes the state, then run it normally.
Another way is to clear the extensions cache and MEF cache before executing devenv.exe |

| The devenv.exe /Setup workaround didn't fix the issue for me. Once it freezes, it's stuck and I have to manually kill devenv.exe and will repeat on every launch afterward unless I choose not to open any projects. I can provide a mini-dump. Please let me know how I can share it with you. I'm using VS 2026 Enterprise with the latest updates (Version 18.1.1). I'm not using Unreal Engine, but I do have an extension developed internally that could potentially be involved (yet disabling it doesn't help). |

Can you please email me at:

about this? I can see about sending you an internal build to test, in the hopes that it will help. Since you have a very reproducible situation we will know quite quickly if it helps. A mini dump is also likely to help if this doesn't fix it. |

| So far with this build I have not encountered hangs when launching VS 2026. |

Wonderful news, thank you for the update! We were hoping we had a solid, reliable fix, but knowing this works for you as well is important confirmation |

What is the status of this issue? I came here for what appears to be the same reason...
Opening a cmake project in VS 2026 can sometimes hang for many minutes or forever. Disabling VAX appears to make the issue go away. Re-enabling VAX via the Manage Extensions menu does not properly re-enable. VAX toolbar is missing. |

We have just released VA 2597, which contains a fix for VS2026 hanging, and this can be downloaded from here:
https://www.wholetomato.com/downloads
A couple of users who encountered the hang bug, one of whom worked with CMake projects, confirmed the fix with an internal build. So I would expect this to fix the hang problem you are seeing.
The problem with disabling VA and VA not working when you enable it again in the extension manager is still a known bug in VS2026 at the moment:
case=166040
but we hope to get a fix for this fairly soon. For the moment you can reinstall VA, which will happen when you upgrade to VA 2597. Or you can run:
devenv.exe /Setup
obviously you need to use the correct path to your VS2026 install, which depends on the edition you have installed. |
