Latests Visual Studio 2026 insider introduced modern color settings. But it has a reggression - no more "automatic" color setting. So i can not set automatic (inherited) foreground for "VA Find Reference" and "VA Find Reference (modified)" which i always used earlear. Visual Assist's own settings only offer a background selection option, implying that only the background color changes (which is indeed how it works in the VA Symbol References window). Therefore, could you change this reference highlight colors setting so that only the background can be selected, while the foreground colors option remains unavailable? May be it needs flag .ForegroundCustomizable = false in the EditorFormatDefinition for these colors (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/microsoft.visualstudio.text.classification.editorformatdefinition?view=visualstudiosdk-2022).

Highlighted "base" foreground font color should be green in editor, as in VA find ref window below:

PS. I also reported this regression to MS, you can vote for it: https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/t/Fonts-and-Colors-unified-settings-regres/11149903

The foreground colour, when set in the IDE options dialog, not being used in the Find References Results window is actually down as a bug:
case=508
Most people don't change the foreground colour for Find References, but to be fair, its not all that obvious that you can do so either.
Thank you for letting us know about this change in the preview version, it will be more widely available soon enough I am sure. |

I am sure that this is not a completely accurate understanding of the issue. The bug is definitely that the foreground color is being used during reference highlighting in editor, not that it is omitted in the find reference search window. The decision to configure only the background color in the VA self settings is absolutely correct and useful. Font foreground color conveys semantics and syntax - such as whether an element is a local or global variable, a function, or a type - whereas the reference background color indicates the operation being performed (read or write). Any change to the font foreground color during reference highlighting breaks language syntax highlighting and creates confusion when analyzing code. Please take this into consideration, and if you decide to retain foreground color settings for reference highlight, at least add an option to disable the use of foreground color. Otherwise, this will make Visual Assist less useful. |
