2 questions about the snippet editor in VS2010 SP1 (and if it matters, am using C++ only)
1. Since the introduction of the new snippet editor, it seems like snippets are now alphabetically sorted when you open the snippet editor. If I close all instances of VS, and use a text editor to manually move the snippet in question back to the location I want, it will stay at that location (e.g. in "Surround With" menus) until I reopen the snippet editor. Is there a way to disable this auto-sorting of snippets?
2. With the new snippet editor, I no longer seem to be able to drag-n-drop snippets within a single language. Is that a bug or a feature? If it's a feature, is there a way to re-enable it?
(Apologies if this question has been asked / answered. I searched the forums but wasn't able to find any relevant posts)
Using 10.8.2043.0, built 2014.07.10

1.) There is no way to disable auto-sorting in new VA Snippet Editor. 2.) It is by design and there is no way for user to re-enable it.
However, if you want to use old VA Snippet Editor in new IDEs, delete or rename a VATE2.DLL in the VA installation directory: http://docs.wholetomato.com/default.asp?W105. |

1. Ouch...OK. I hope we will see that feature re-added (or more specifically, a way to control the order the snippets appear in the menus). I really like the new editor....but forcing the snippets to be alphabetized seems a bit arbitrary. I will try the workaround you suggested, but switching to an entirely different editor so that the order of snippets in the menu doesn't change seems kind of heavy-handed (for what it's worth).
Thanks for the help! |

This is a fair point, I have put in a feature request to see what we can do about this:

Thinking about this a bit more, are you looking for a lot of control over the ordering of the items in the menu, or are you mainly interested in just making sure a couple of items are in specific positions, presumably the top and bottom of the menu, since these are the most easily accessed spots with the keyboard.
Its just that if you are still using the new editor, and mainly want to move just a couple of specific items, you could do this by putting a prefix on their names, just to make sure they appear at the top or bottom of the alphabetical list. |
