Is there a way to be 'done' with finding a reference and stop highlighting it?

With keyboard focus in the editor simply press Escape.

Alternatively, to stop Find References from highlighting at all, turn off:

VA Options -> Refactoring -> Highlight references using <colour> and <colour>

That only turns off the highlight until you go back to that file. It's still highlighted forever and you'll have to keep hitting escape.

I am not seeing that effect. Can you please look and see if you have:

VA Options -> Refactoring -> Automatically highlight references to symbol under cursor

turned On? If this was turned On this might explain the highlighting that you are seeing.
