I just upgraded from 1246 to 1287. After upgrading the syntax coloring stopped working. It seems to me as if parsing of the header files does not complete. It sometimes stops scanning at system files like stddef.h and sometimes at user files (the status bar still shows "Parsing whateverfile.h").
I tried all sorts of uninstalling, reinstalling, cleaning up the registry, rebuilding the database, reseting colors to standard, installing old versions. Nothing helped and even using the older version 1246 does not give me any syntax coloring anymore.
What to do now?

Parsing: It doesn't stop parsing, it just stops updating the StatusBar. Press ALT + SHIFT + O (OFIW-Dialog will pop up telling you in the titlebar if parsing is finished). I have an entry in the Bugbase for that, but since I was the only one affected by this (no-one else posted anything about that) I closed it. Maybe I should reopen it since the German IDE (which I also use) seems to have this problem not only on my machine... but be assured that parsing IS going on, you can hear it (Hard-Drive heavily working and no updates to StatusBar are written).
Syntax-Coloring: Are you sure you enabled Syntax-Coloring in the Options? (Options -> Environment -> Fonts & Colors -> Apply coloring to...) I'm using the German Visual Studio .NET 2003 and VAX for ages and never really had a Problem with syntax-coloring. I never even cared about what "Identifier" means in German etc, cause it always worked perfect from scratch...

I have definitely activated syntay coloring (turned it off and on again just to make sure). VAX seems to be active in the text window because if it is turned on it does underline spelling errors in comments. But that's the only thing that seems to work. Maybe I have to try and reinstall Visual Studio but this has to wait for a couple of days as I am currently working on a project and cannot afford to loose a day for installation issues.

Count me in. I can see this (parsing works, but status bar not updated) all the time, and I don't have German settings or IDE. What I sometimes do is click on some of the tabs in the group of windows I have docked below, and this somehow "forces" status bar to update for a few seconds, then stops again.
To me, this smells like Visual Studio issue and not VA.X, or it may be related to VSIP.

This problem when solved will be simple |

draza, are you using some kind of localized IDE (French maybe)?
It seems that only localized Visual Studios are affected by this, cause the guys at WT were nor able to reproduce this one yet (sometimes it works even on my system perfect, showing all the infos in the statusbar). Can you confirm this?

Try "Use defaults" in Tools|Options|Environment|Fonts and Colors.
If okay, revisit the dialog to apply custom colors. |

Wrongo! I am not using a localized system, and every single time I upgrade (for the last 5 or so versions), the coloring breaks. We 'black backgrounders' are apparently also all in the same boat...
I don't even upgrade at work anyone: I upgrade at home, and just leave the syntax coloring broken...

Larry, I'm not talking about coloring, I'm talking about "StatusBar is not updated while parsing, i. e. it says "Parsing C:\\...\\blahblah.h" for ages although parsing finished long time ago).
Support is talking about coloring, that's the problem when we have 2 bugs mentioned in 1 thread... |

Oops. Never mind. I have a "one thread, one bug" rule, too...

I mentioned both problems here since I figured they might relate to each other. No correct parsing -> No correct coloring...

I just noticed that coloring DOES work when using C#. It DOES NOT work when using C++.

Yup! Just tried default colors in VAX and VS to be sure. Did not help.

*sigh* not good. would it be possible for you to install VAX, reset the IDE, then reinstall VAX? this is grasping at straws but it might work.
if it does not and you have the time you could try the following. uninstall VAX, then using regedit VERY CAREFULLY search for all instances of the word "tomato" and then delete these before reinstalling VAX.
this is based on Larry's experiences: http://forum.wholetomato.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3206&SearchTerms=registry,tomato
not really an ideal solution, but i am not sure what else to suggest. |

I will probably try this between christmas and new year. Maybe that would be a good point in time to reinstall the whole system. I will let you guys know if anything worked or not...

Hey, if you feel like it, and have plenty of free time, you could do what I was going to do someday: delete the Registry keys/disk files one at a time, then do the install after each, and see which key/file it is that fixes it!
