Hi all,

IG??ve been having this problem for a while now. IG??m using VS2005 SP1 and the current release of Visual Assist X.

My problem is that quite often Visual Assist will send the open parentheses G??(G?? to some open document other than the one IG??m editing. IG??ve had this problem for the last several builds of Visual Assist and its really starting to be a problem. I have no idea why it chooses to put the text in the files it does but when it starts happening I am no longer able to type the open paren in the active document. I hit the key but no char appears. Sure enough if I look through the open documents I will find one that has been modified with an open paren randomly placed in the file.

This happens so often that IG??ve had to make all of the standard headers read only as well as any files IG??m not working on. Disabling Visual Assist allows me to continue working. Enabling VA again without restarting Visual Studio will cause the problem to return.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them?
Is this a known issue?
I cant imagine IG??m the only one with this problem because it happens so often.

This is a known problem (case=4903) that will be addressed in the next build.

In the meantime, a workaround is disable the "Show Miscellaneous files in Solution Explorer" setting in Tools|Options|Environment|Documents.

The fix for case 4903 caused a regression in build 1547 and will be removed from build 1548.

Until 4903 is actually fixed, disable the "Show Miscellaneous files in Solution Explorer" setting in Tools|Options|Environment|Documents.

Even with latest version:
VA_X.dll file version 10.3.1559.0 built 2007.07.06
and "Show Miscellaneous files in Solution Explorer" disabled, this still happens.

Which IDE and programming language are you using?

Does this happen all of the time? Some of the time? Occasionally?
Is there any pattern or trigger to this problem?
Do you have any other IDE plugin's installed?

Which characters are being effected?

Visual Studio 2005 SP1 with C++. Only plugins installed are VA and Perforce. It happens rarely but it happens. Most of the time its "(" or "{" that goes missing. One thing I noticed is that when this happens the auto complete for () and {} stops working. There is no pattern that I have noticed that triggers this. If I can help in any other way let me know.

Are the characters being sent to another file? If so it should show up as modified on the list of open tabs / files.
Or are the characters simply being "lost"?

We have had occasional reports of brackets being lost when typing in very complex C++ code full of macros. I am wondering if something similar is happening here.

The characters are getting lost (at least I haven't noticed them in any other file).

That suggests this is a different problem, which makes sense, since you have the IDE option "Show Miscellaneous files in Solution Explorer" turned off.

Once this starts happening if you type the bracket a second time is it inserted correctly? Or does this still not work?

Are you noticing this in any file, even very simple code files, or does it only seem to happen in more complex files?

I have emailed you about this.

This happened on a file that has a lot of code, not very complex but not simple either, just a lot of it.

Brackets seems to be very rare, ( seems to be the worst offender. The only way to get it to stop is to close VS.
