After an update to any VAX version greater than 1547 I get a error message after every save operation.

The message box has the title "Microsoft Visual Studio" and the text "Unspecified" error.

If I close Visual Studio I get a lot of these error messages. I think for every closed file one.

As hint: I get the same strange behaviour with VAX 1547 if I change something in the Options.

Tell me how I can help to debug this error.

Are you logged in with an administrator rights?
Are you running the IDE as administrator, or as a limited user?

This should not matter, but since you are seeing this when using our options dialog I am wondering if there is some form of permissions problem.

Do you have any other plugin's installed?

Yes, I'm logged in with administrator rights.
I running also the IDE with administrator rights, but not as administrator. My user is a domain user, but part of the administrator group.

I see it not with your option dialog, but after changing something in the Visual Studio option dialog.

In Visual Studio 2003 I have only VAX installed.

Can you try stopping VAX from loading when you running VS2003 and see if this makes any difference to the errors in the IDE options dialog please:

I tested that, and I get this errors only if VAX is loaded.

I just saw that with the latest version I get also a such error when I simple start editing an open source file.

The problem seems to exist in older versions too (at least since 6 months), but in the past it only occurred after changing something in the "Tools"=>"Options..." dialog of visual studio 2003. After the change, this "Unspecified Error" occurred for every closed tab while quit visual studio. Sometimes it was not possible to edit documents afterwards, no user input was accepted.

I always thought this is a visual studio problem, but it seems to be a VAX problem.

Version information from my visual studio installation:
Microsoft Development Environment 2003 - Version 7.1.6030
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 - 1.1.4322 SP1

I just reinstalled visual studio 2003 two months ago. I downloaded the version from MSDN.

All developers here which are using VAX, but with different installations of visual studio .net 2003 have the same problem (even with the german translation of VS.NET 2003).

Interesting detail by the way, VAX is reporting version 7.10.6030.0 of VS, and VS itself is reporting version 7.1.6030 in the about dialog.

Do all of the developers have a localised OS?
Is there anything that all of these machines have in common that is at all "odd" or "unusual"?

Since it is not the IDE, and since no one else seems to be having this problem I am wondering if you are running a program / utility that is somehow conflicting with VA. If so what is this program / utility?

Can you try a couple of things please. Turn on VA's logging - as described here:

http://docs.wholetomato.com?W305

and also run Process Monitor:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/processmonitor.mspx

filtered to show all activity for the process called "devenv.exe", and then produce one or more of these error messages. Can you then send me both the log from Process Monitor and the VA logs please.

Hopefully this will give us some clues as to the problem.

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0113'

Script timed out

/support/contact.asp

The maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded. You can change this limit by specifying a new value for the property Server.ScriptTimeout or by changing the value in the IIS administration tools.

That was unexpected. I have just emailed you via the forum, can you please reply to the email with the files attached. This way they should reach me a little more reliably.

I have asked our developers to have a look at the log files. VA is certainly catching exceptions, which should give us some clues.

Do you have any other plugin's installed?
Are there any programs / utilities that are installed on all developer machines? I am looking for anything you are running that I am not running, that might be causing problems.

Does disabling anti-virus or spyware scanning software make any difference?

All developer have this software installed:
- ClearCase (IBM)
- ClearQuest (IBM)
- Documentum Workspace (by Documentum Inc., now EMC)
- eTrust Antivirus (by Computer Associates)
- Noah System (by HIMSA)

But most of the software is not running all the time.

Do any of these install plugin's into the IDE? Is anything other than "Visual Assist X" listed in:

IDE tools menu -> Add-in Manager -> list of available add-ins

I sort of recognise ClearCase, but don't know anything about it. A quick google for some of these is offering me an online only trial for ClearCase (not helpful), and a 1.3Gig to 2.7Gig download for ClearQuest
