I use VA w/ VS 2003 via Remote Desktop, I a started having a very annoying flicker problem (screen redraws completely while doing anything in the editor. If I disable VA integration the flicker problem goes away.
Thanks Chris

Unfortunately this is a known problem at the moment:
case=281
You may want to try disabling VA's enhanced syntax highlighting, which should help, while working via remote desktop. |

feline, Thanks for the quick reply, I tried turning off the enhanced coloring, but still the same. I will try restarting devstudio to see if that helps.

Might try again and also disable both Underline options, both {} highlight options and the indicator column if you had any of them enabled. |

Hasn't this issue been going on for some time now? Just wondering if there's any ETA for a fix, as I've being upgrading on every release hoping for this one problem to be sorted. |

Unfortunately no estimate yet. Since we have to do our enhanced syntax highlighting by sneaking around behind the IDE this complicates matters.
I have bumped the priority on this for you, hopefully this will help. |

I have the same problem. I'm working mostly via remote desktop and it's rather annoying. Disabling syntax highlight stops the flickering but... i bought VA also for that feature! |

I know it does not fix the colouring / flicker problem, but check out VA's refactoring features. Find References is a good place to start. You should find these very helpful, and they should work without any problems over remote desktop. |

It is affecting me too. I am using remote desktop to work on a sever in another state. I love syntax highlighting but the flick is gonna give me brain seizures. |

I had the same flicker problem on 1559 but it was any time I was inspecting an object, not using remote desktop.
I was able to keep syntax coloring but eliminate the flicker by disabling (un-checking) the Tooltips box in the "Apply Coloring To" list just below the Sytax Color options in the VAssistX settings. |

I just tried this suggestion using remote desktop and it does not solve the issue. (I was hoping it would)

This is also a problem using Vista and connecting to Windows XP using Remote desktop. When will this issue be fixed? |

Unfortunately I do not have any estimate on this. It is being looked at, but I am not sure when it will be resolved. |

Any more updates on this, I am working more and more remotely and this is becoming a real nuisance.
Thanks |

We have made some internal changes to how VA colouring works for the next build. Hopefully these changes will help a bit, but I am not actually sure if they will or not.
We are currently working to get the next build ready to post, so hopefully it will appear fairly soon. |

Not sure if this helps but I downgraded to 10.2.1440.0 and the problem is gone. Whatever you did about the rendering is something new from v.10.3.xxxx or v.10.4.xxxx |

Just to keep you posted - the last build didn't solve the issue. had to go back again to 10.2.1440 eventough the latest version has some neat features it's practically unusable with this flickering... |

Apologies for this. This is down as a fairly urgent bug, but I do not have an estimate on when this will be fixed.
In the newer versions of VA have you tried turning off:
VA Options -> Advanced -> Fonts and Colors -> Enable Enhanced Syntax Coloring VA Options -> Advanced -> Correction -> underline spelling errors in comments and string using VA Options -> Advanced -> Correction -> underline mistyped symbols using VA Options -> Advanced -> Correction -> highlight matching {} and () using VA Options -> Advanced -> Correction -> highlight mismatching {} and () using VA Options -> Advanced -> General -> Display indicator after column
This should help, while letting you use the other features of VA. |

No, and I would like to have the additional syntax coloring too. Version 10.2 is good enough, however I'd love to hear from you when you fix it in a new version :)
And yes, my initial reaction about a year ago would be "who the f*** will use remote desktop for development?", however our company's policy restricts accessing some information accross the net and for some cases I have to connect to a remote server and use visual studio on it instead of my development machine... |

I just checked the latest version and this bug is still there. Do you have any plans to fix it? |

This is on our list of things to fix, but it is not an easy fix, since you are supposed to do all your window drawing differently when using remote desktop.
How fast a connection are you using? Connecting from winXP to Vista over a local network I am seeing very little flickering in remote desktop. In the Remote Desktop connection dialog I opened Options, then on the Experience tab I set the connection speed to "LAN (10 Mbps or higher)" with all of the check boxes on.
Does upping the connection speed in the options help, assuming your connection can take this? |

I understand that, but please note that this problem wasn't present in version 10.2

Working at home in California, connecting to a machine in the data center in NY. I experimented with a server in Europe and it was even more noticeable.

Well, using a slower connection definitely helps notice the flickering and it's enough to irritate my eyes.

Unfortunately this is not an option with my current setup (i.e. the server I'm working is far away from me). |

I see the problem. Unfortunately all I can suggest for now is turning off VA's colouring and underlining options, to try and improve performance, or downgrading to an older version of VA.
This is down as a high priority bug fix, but it is not an easy one. |

I fixed the flicker, seems that perhaps Resharper and VX were fighting. Setting Resharper to c# only files fixed the issue :)
VX is brilliant!
+1 purchase |
