Myself and a colleague have both experienced a problem where only alpha-num keys work. It's just happened to me again and I can actually still type _ and $ but no other keys work (including space)
If I disable VA everything works ok, enable it and it's back to not working again. Can't see anything in the forums about this ...

Do you have the IDE setting:

"Show Miscellaneous files in Solution Explorer" in Tools|Options|Environment|Documents.

turned on? There is a known problem where brackets are sometimes sent to the wrong file if this setting is turned on. This is actually an IDE bug, it is reporting the wrong file as the active file, and we are trying to find a reliable fix in VAX. I don't recall anyone ever reporting this effect with this bug though, so this may not be the problem in your case.

Unfortunately we do not yet have one, but turning off this option fixes the problem.

case=4903

Does this happen all of the time, or does something trigger it?

No I don't - don't expect my colleague has either, but I can't check. It's happened to me only twice. I also have viEmu installed, and initially suspected that, but disabling that had no effect (and my colleague does not have it installed). So far either restarting devenv or turn off VA is the only cure. I have no idea what causes it either. If I find out anything more I'll post

Do you and your colleague have any system utilities in common? Specifically any programs that might be installing a low level or global keyboard hook?

When this problem starts happening can you trigger VA's Rename refactoring, and see if you can type these characters into the Rename dialog? Can you also try the IDE's Find dialog, and Notepad. I am wondering about the scope of this problem.

If it only effects typing into the editor that is different to any dialog in the IDE, or it could even be a system wide problem, although that seems extremely unlikely.

Does your colleague have any IDE plugin's installed?
Has he ever installed viEmu?

I would not expect viEmu to be causing this problem, but some form of interaction between VA and viEmu is possible. So if there are traces of viEmu on your colleagues machine this might explain why both of you are seeing this problem.

We both use prodg, but I can't imagine that wouldn't affect editing.
can type ok in a cmd box, and probably other stuff like notepad. Don't know about devenv 'hosted' dialogs like find.
He's never, nor will he ever use viEmu ;)

Is this the right website for prodg?

http://www.snsys.com/psp/ProDG.asp

The reference to visual studio integration is catching my eye. I recall there was a problem a while ago with VA and a specific add-in for console development. I don't remember the details off hand, but if this has installed an IDE plugin then this is a possible trigger for the problem.

The fact typing in a command window suggests it should work fine in notepad, and that this is an IDE specific problem.

yes there was a problem a long time ago now - seems to have been fixed though. Nearly everyone here has that installed but only 2 of us have the keyboard problem

There goes another theory

The fact this is only effecting two machines is very interesting. Do you know of anything unusual or odd about these two machines, the software installed, or the types of jobs you are doing? I am looking for any sort of clue.

Are you the only two people using VA 1559 for example? Or a specific version of prodg?

I have emailed you about this.

Has this issue been resolved or a workaround found? I seem to be experiencing the same problem, and I am also using the ProDG Visual Studio integration. ProDG by itself does not seem to be a problem - it's only when I'm frequently using the ProDG debugger that I see issues (the debugger has some kind of active connection to VS that it uses to synchronize breakpoints).

My problems are not just limited to non alpha keys - I've seen all kinds input issues as well as syntax coloring that stopped working. I've also had random message boxes pop up with no message text that appear to be from VA, based on the few characters I can see in the title bar (Windows truncates the text because the boxes are so small).

I have seen reports of these empty error messages before. They are normally triggered by a corrupt VA symbol database. Can you try pressing the button:

VA Options -> Performance -> Rebuild symbol databases

and see if this helps please?

Which version of ProDG Visual Studio Integration are you using? ProDG caused a problem for VA several builds ago, but that was fixed. For my own reference that fix was in:

case=8927

Next time you see this problem can you please turn on VA logging, type a few characters in a couple of different files, to reproduce the problem, and then close the IDE and send me the log files. Closing the IDE stops the log files from getting to large. Hopefully they will offer some initial clues.

Please see this FAQ for details of turning on VA's logging, and sending us the log files

After rebuilding the symbol database and clearing the VA cache I have not been able to reproduce the problems I was seeing. If I see it again I'll grab a log.

Thanks for your help.

I am glad the problem has gone away. We have made some changes to how VA handles its symbol database for the next version, which will hopefully reduce problems with a corrupt symbol database.

Hopefully this new version will be posted in the next few days.
