Everytime I try to startup Visual Studio, I get the following error message:
"Please run this program from the Administrator account so it can set up your license. Once the license is set up, you can run it from any account."
When I log on as Administrator and startup Visual Studio, everything works fine. Then, when I switch back to my regular user account everything works for a while, but within a few hours I will have the same problem. We are using an Active Directory server and I assume there is some Group Policy that is overwriting whatever license setting is changed by the local Administrator account, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. Can someone please help?

Does your normal user have administrator privileges?
I don't recognise this problem, so I am not quite sure where to start.
Which IDE and version of VA are you using? |

My "normal user" is a non-administrator domain account.
I am running VS 2005 Pro and VA 10.3.1561.0.

Have you used any earlier versions of VA on this machine?
We made some changes to how the licence key system works after VA 1557, so I am wondering if the earlier version was more successful for you. Can you try downloading and installing VA 1557 please, and see if it is able to store and retrieve the key correctly:

We just recently switched to Active Directory and non-administrator users, which is when the trouble began. Although I have another non-administrator user not on Active Directory that works fine.
VA 1557 exhibits the same behavior. Works for a while, until a Group Policy update that steps on the license. |

So much for that theory. I have asked internally about this. I suspect you will need to ask your network administrator to change the Group Policy update slightly to avoid wiping out VA's license key, but this is just a guess.
I have asked if anyone knows what changes should be made.

Are you able to ask your network administrator what changes the Group Policy update is making to your registry? Unfortunately we are not sure what to recommend to try and avoid the problem. |

I'm afraid I am mostly on my own here as the network administrator is busy with bigger issues. If I could isolate the problem, I'm sure they could modify the GPO, but the investigative work is left up to me. There is a log file with many, many GPO rules. It would be helpful to know where in the registry the license info is kept. i.e., is it in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, or elsewhere? Also, does VA need write access to any files in the Program Files directory tree or elsewhere?

To be honest the license key system is a black box to me, we use an external product for this, so it is not something we have much, if any, control over.
Program Files tree, by default VA installs its self into this directory tree, but you can change this when you install the program. The installer tends to reset the IDE, so runs the command:
C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\\Common7\\IDE\\devenv.exe /setup
So in that sense it requires write access to the directory tree, but this is something that is done when installing VA, and is separate to the license key.
