Hi!

I've found probably bug in VAX. When I choose 'Find references' from
menu, sometimes 'VA Find Reference Result Window' seems to be stuck.

I see icon of that window on the bottom of the Visual Studio but when I press mouse on icon nothing happens. The only solution is to make one of the neighbouring windows floating and then I can close it.

And 'VA Find Reference Result Window' does not remember it's size. Often is very small. Each time I make 'Find reference' search I've to resize it manually.

Tested on Visual Studio 2003 and Visual Assist X 10.4.1614 built 2007.10.22

Can you post a screen shot showing your IDE window layout?

Is the Find References Results window normally open on your system, or do you close it?

After loading project I've layout which looks like this:

Invoking for the first time 'Find References' opens that small window. If I close visual studio and open it again window size won't be remembered:

When I call 'Find Reference' small icon appears at bottom of the window (I marked it with red colour) Please notice right up part of the window you can see there "pin" and "x" button (also marked with red)

But when I press VA Find Reference Results icon, only tab changes
content is the same as in previous window. Also check right up part of the window (marked with red colour) the "pin" disappeared. And "Va Find Reference Result" window is unusable.

But when I go back to the previous window and I press that "pin" ...

"Va Find Reference Results" windows changes its position and again
everything is ok.

I hope this post will help you.

I see the problem, the screen shots really help to explain it, thank you for that.

So far I am not seeing any problems here. I have made sure I have the same set of windows, docked and set to autohide, along the bottom of the IDE, but VA's Find References Results window always appears correctly for me.

Do you have any other IDE plugin's installed?

Can you try pressing the button:

IDE tools menu -> Options -> Environment -> General -> Reset Window Layout button

and see if this helps?

Still the same problem.

The only one plugin I'm using right now is "Project Line Counter". But I don't think this is the reason.

Try to do Reference Search often on big projects. That window will get stuck sooner or later.

Maybe try search on macros?

How big is your project? Approximately how many files does it contain?
You get get this information from the title bar of VA's OFIW dialog.

Do you see this problem every time you run Find References? Or only some of the time?

How are you triggering Find References? This should not matter, but maybe it does.

My project has about 877 lines and includes a lot of macros.

I'm running Find reference by pressing small icon
which appears when moving mouse pointer around symbol in my code.

It happens from time to time. I don't know how to repeat it but
it will definitely happen. I've tested it on 3 different machines
with visual studio 2003 .net with 3 different projects and the problem is still there.

Every time I start IDE 'VA Find Reference Results' window dimensions are not remembered. Maybe it has something to do with auto hide feature?

How often does this fail for you? 1 time in 10? 1 time in 50?

So far I cannot reproduce any of these problems.

Looking at your first and second screen shots, when the Find References Results window appears it is not pinned, so it is going to auto hide. Is it always like this?

Using VS2003 and VA 1614 I told the IDE to reset the window layout. After this reset I triggered Find References via the hovering refactoring icon. When the Find References Results window appeared it was pinned open, at the bottom of the screen. I have to unpin it before it will autohide.

Can you try resetting your window layout a second time, and then run Find References before you make any changes to the window layout?

I am wondering why you are seeing such a different effect to the one I am seeing.

Hi!

I've installed Visual Studio 2008 Orcas to test if the same issue exists in the newest IDE. So far this never happened to me on the same project in VS2008.

I'm supposing that maybe somewhere is a bug in VS2003 in auto-hiding feature? For example when I doing search in files "CTRL+F" window pops up with result but sometimes for unknown reason VA Find Reference is not poping up in the same way as search window. It is stuck. And the
VA reference is the only window which stuck from time to time.

It is also hard to say how often this happens.

But when window is pinned this strange window behaviour never occurs (as far as I tested) only with auto hide feature enabled (unpinned).

I don't know how to describe it clearer.

ps. sorry for my english :)

If English is not your first language then you are doing very well

This is a confusing problem. The screen shots show the problem you are seeing quite clearly, but so far I cannot reproduce it.

If you run Find References 20 times would you expect to see this problem?
A guess at how often it fails would be useful, then I can try a similar number of Find References here in a large project, and see what happens.

hehe thanks ;)

Ok right now everything seems to be ok! I've tried many times today
and nothing happens :/ Maybe installation of new visual studio
repaired something in previous version? ;)
The only issue I see right now is the window size is not remembered
and IDE crash ('Pure virtual function call') after making few
find reference searches and rename search (at the same time).

I would not expect installing VS2008 to fix VS2003, but I am happy it did

Window size, I am seeing some odd behaviour with the IDE's breakpoints window.
The size problems are minor, nothing like the effect you are seeing, but I tried this window to see
if the IDE on its own had problems with window sizes.
If you leave the Find References Results open, and just let it autohide does it remember its size?
I am wondering if this would be a good workaround for now.

How easily can you reproduce this crash?
It sounds familiar, I recall a similar report when running two Find References at the same time.
I have just tried a Find References and a Rename at the same time here, and no crash.

Are you running the find and the rename on the same symbol, or different symbols?
