Two questions:

1. If you have a licensed version of VA X installed, can you install a newer (trial) version (e. g. one that is not 'generally released' yet) for trial and fall back to the older if there are still problems?

2. Is it possible to do the same if maintenance is already expired?

I'm asking because once maintenance of the original license is expired some might not be willing to renew it unless there are worthwhile new features to be had. And whether or not they are worthwhile might in turn require to have a look at it.

Good questions. The short answer is Yes.

If you install a new version that is not covered by your current license key then it will run in trial mode. Normally you will only get a 3 day trial, since you have previously tried VA on your machine.

At the end of the trial you can simply reinstall your old version.

If you need a longer trial we can produce a trial license key to keep the new version running. You do need to request this, simply because we don't want people running a series of trial keys and never purchasing a license

Thank you, 3 days will do. I'll just have to time it so I can actually show it to my boss to see for himself :)

I did not get a 3-day trial, VA simply stated that I need to purchase or cancel. How can I turn the 3-day trial back on?

Strange, you should have received a 3 day trial. Do you know which version of VA you installed, and which version you were previously using?

If you contact me via this form:

http://www.wholetomato.com/support/contact.asp

including this thread ID or URL in the description, so we can match it up, I will ask someone to send you a trial key you can use to try the latest version of VA.

My mistake, it did give me a 3-day trial. The "trick" is to install the new version on top of the old - that is, treat the new version as an "upgrade" and do not remove the old version before hand.

FWIW I did not get a 'mini-trial' when I upgraded by 1649 installation to 1715. I've reverted back to 1649 - I'll definitely be re-upping the support at some point soon, so there's no reason to troubleshoot this - I was just checking to see if a couple sympols that were getting "Refactoring not available for symbol" messages might start working with an update.
