Just an FYI on build 1638 (not sure if this is a problem or if something that just needed to happen on my system): to get Enhanced Syntax Coloring to work properly I had to reset the VS 2008 Fonts & Colors back to default.
I have seen the same problem myself, but it is very rare. I install new builds of VA a lot, and I encounter this perhaps once in 6 months. As you found resetting the IDE fonts and colours fixes the problem.
Since the problem is so rare I have never made any progress reproducing it.
