I am have been having issues with Syntax Coloring since ver 1635 in visual Studio 2005 on XP, or I should say that 1635 is the last version where Syntax coloring worked. Every time I download a new version it stops working, but if I go back it is all good again. I have tried clearing the cache in Visual Assist, but not resetting to defaults in Visual Studio. Mostly because I like to work with a dark background and I don't want to change my colors back.

Can you try to reset the Fonts & Colors back to default just to see if this helps?
Some user have reported that it can help when syntax coloring stops working.

But I understand if you don't want to loose your colors. In this case you can save and restore your settings using
IDE tools menu -> Import and Export Settings -> Export selected environment settings

If reset works, you can check, if it keeps working after a restore of settings.

Well, I tried this, but it didn't help. Any other suggestions or Questions?

Do you have any other IDE plugin's installed?
If you enable colouring in other areas, e.g. tooltips and VA Outline does this work? Or is VA unable to apply colouring anywhere?

Are you running winXP SP3? We have a user reporting colouring problems since installing SP3, but so far I cannot reproduce any problems due to SP3.

I do have one other add-in installed AnkhSVN, but it is for Source Control. I hadn't realized before but tooltips are colored, and my braces are being highlighted, although it looks like they are getting clipped sometimes.

And I am running SP2 (corporate PC, can't install SP3), which reminds me I should have copied my System Info before.

Can you try going into the IDE options and pressing the button:

IDE tools menu -> Options -> Environment -> Fonts and Colors -> Use Defaults

We have just had another thread where a user was reporting a similar problem, and this fixed the problem. The first time they went into the VA options and selected default colours, but you need to go into the IDE options and do this.

If this does not help does changing your IDE font to "Courier New" make any difference? I do not recognise the "Monaco" font.

Does restarting the IDE make any difference?

I tried using defaults in both the IDE, and in Whole Tomato, which changed the font back to "Courier New". And then I restarted the IDE, but it didn't help.

This FAQ entry explains how to stop VA from loading:

http://docs.wholetomato.com?W306

can you see if there is a similar registry key that will stop the AnkhSVN plugin from loading? This plugin should not be a factor, but it might be.

I am not seeing anything worrying in your about information.

If you create a new, default C++ solution do you see colouring in its files?

Uninstalled the other Plugin, and no color, created a new Default C++ solution and no colour.

I also just re-confirmed that the Coloring did work in Build 1635 (with my existing and new projects) and not 1638 and it sill does not work in 1646. I didn't check builds 1639, or 1640.

Did you install VA 1635 over the top, and colouring worked?
And then reinstalled VA 1640 and colouring does not work?

I just want to make sure I understand correctly. If so then this rules out the standard problems.

Is there anything "odd" about your system? Any system utilities that might be interfering with how VA draws to the screen?

Are you running the VA installer as an administrator, or as a more limited user?

Are you seeing any other problems? Or are the other VA features working correctly?

Yes, this is correct. To be precise I had 1639 installed, and the coloring did not work, I ran the install for 1635 (no other changes) and coloring worked, then I ran 1638, and coloring did not work, and finally 1640 and it still did not work.

Nothing that really springs to mind, I just stopped Yahoo Widgets, and the coloring still did not work. There is also IBM Tivoli Remote Control, Remote Administrator, and Pointsec installed and running I am not sure which of these I could stop if needed. Corporate support installed them, and if I uninstall or stop them they will likely get restarted or re-installed overnight, automatically.

I install and run as an administrator.

Everything else I really want seems to be working ok. Coloring in tool tips works, the highlight matching {} and () seems to be a bit iffy {} in my code tend to be on separate lines and they work ok, but sometimes the closing ')' doesn't get colored, or maybe just the "middle half" of the opening '(' gets colored.

Can you please export your VA and IDE settings and send them to me:

VA Options -> Performance -> Export Settings
IDE tools menu -> Import and Export Settings -> Export selected environment settings

Please submit the files via the form:

http://www.wholetomato.com/support/contact.asp

including this thread ID or URL in the description, so we can match it up.

I can then try importing your settings on a test system here and see if I see any problems.

I am also seeing this problem on ver. 1647, Windows XP SP3, VS2005, C#. I have tried resetting all the defaults like suggested and it still doesn't work. I have disabled enhanced syntax coloring and then renabled it. All of this has failed.

The only thing that has changed on my system is that I recently reset my settings on the IDE to fix another problem I was having. Since then no syntax coloring for VAX.

If you make a new default C++ solution do you see VA syntax colouring? I am wondering if this is somehow solution or language specific.

Have you restarted the IDE since you told the IDE to use the default syntax highlighting?
