At first I have installed Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Assist X 10.4.1647.0, both of them works well. But then when I have installed Windows Embedded CE6.0(Platform Builder 6.0), Visual Studio 2005 will crash when exit. But if I disable Visual Assist(must use Visual Studio 2005->Tools->Options, then select "Environment:add-in/Macros Security", uncheck "Allow Add-in components to load" to disable it. If use Visual Assist menu to disable it, IDE will still crash when exit), Visual Studio 2005 can work well. I think maybe there are some conflicts between Platform Builder 6.0 and Visual Assist X.

We had another user report a similar problem, but I was unable to reproduce this. I installed Platform Builder on a test machine but could never make the IDE crash.

case=18531

Does the IDE crash every time, or only some times?

Does the IDE crash if you load it and then close it, but do not load any solution?

Can you please go to:

VA Options -> System Info -> Copy Info

and paste the details (from the clipboard) into your reply. This will give us the basic information about your setup.

IDE crash every time when close.
I just load it and then close it, but do not load any solution.

Can you try upgrading to VA 1649 please. This may not help, but it should make it easier for us to study this problem:

http://www.wholetomato.com/downloads/default.asp

If the IDE still crashes can you please load the IDE, but do not load any solution, then close it, and when it crashes attach a second instance of the IDE and save out a mini dump file.

Please send us the mini dump file, hopefully it will offer some clues. Please submit the files via the form:

http://www.wholetomato.com/support/contact.asp

including this thread ID or URL in the description, so we can match it up.

I'm having the exact same problem. I also have Platform Builder 6.0 installed.

It crashes on exit regardless of whether I load a solution or not, every time. I've tried un-checking and re-checking the "Allow components to load" box, but if VAX has loaded, Visual Studio still crashes.

The only way I've found to prevent the crash is to either uninstall VAX, or uncheck "Allow components to load" and reload VS2005 (crashing on the way out) so that VAX load.

Normally crashing on exit would just be an annoyance, but the problem is that VS2005 doesn't manage to save some settings (toolbar settings and other workspace preferences) when this happens.

Next time you get the crash can you please save out a mini dump file. Hopefully it will offer some clues to the cause of the crash. This FAQ entry explains how to save out a mini dump and send it to us:

http://docs.wholetomato.com?W303

Do you have any other IDE plugin's installed?
Are you running the IDE as an administrator or a limited user?

I've sent in the mini-dump to the support request.

I'm running ViEmu, but my coworker is not and the crash happens regardless of whether or not I uninstall it -- so I'm fairly certain it's a red herring.

I am an administrator on the machine.

Hope this helps,
Robert

Well, Houston it seems like we have a problem running VS 2005 SP1 on XP 32 and 64-bit machines.
After installing CE 60, and all updates (up to August this year) VS crashes on exit.
Pattern:

Solution not loaded, NO CRASH.
Solution (any type, CE, MFC e.t.c.) loaded, CRASH ON EXIT.

Disabling VA using VA or using Add-in manager:
:
After restarting, VA is disabled. After loading solution VA G?autoG? enables itself.

Crash behavior as above.

Disabling add-in load from Tools->Options->Macro. . . PREVENTS CRASH.

Information generated by M$ problem reporting tool not included since it is a mile long.
I am sending copy of this post + VA information + attached file, to you support guys.

It would be to be able to attach files to this post.

JohnCz --

When I upgraded to VAX 10.5.1731.0, the problem went away for me (see the changelist, they fixed a problem when platform builder is installed in that release).

If you aren't running the latest, version, I suggest trying that.

Forgot to add another use case:
Loading solution then unloading it -> CRASH on exit.

Only some solutions cause crash problem. It is real fun to find a solution (no pun intended) to a intermittent(?) problem.
Possibly, we are missing something trying to find any pattern.

Thanks for your response, robertestelle.

I am running VA_X.dll file version 10.5.1727.0 built 2009.06.12 installed *after installing CE 6.0*.
I thought it would fix the problem.
I was not able to locate 1731. Dowload page shows as follows:

Latest Builds

Visual Assist X 10.5.1727.0 (General release requires maintenance through 2009.06.12.) release notes

Visual Assist X 10.5.1734.0 (Beta release requires maintenance through 2009.09.02.)

Where can i get it? I am reluctant to use BETA

Hi John,

You can find it here: http://wholetomato.com/support/history.asp

Yes, it is a Beta release, but it fixes that particular crash (for me), and I haven't run into any new issues using it.
