I've noticed that the column indicator does not render on Vista when the DWM is disabled. Pretty weird.

You can easily repro this on Vista by just doing "net stop uxsms" from a command line. The indicator column disappears. If you do "net start uxsms" then the column reappears.

I normally leave DWM running, but Maya and a few other tools I occasionally use on here force Vista to disable DWM when they run, which in turn makes the indicator column disappear from VS.NET.

Scott,

On my Vista Business x64 system, the column indicator renders when the text editor has focus, and doesn't render otherwise. For instance, clicking in the Properties window, then dragging the IDE partially offscreen and back "erases" part of the column indicator and fails to repaint it until the text editor has focus again. This behavior seems independent of the Desktop Window Manager (DWM) settings. I also have a 32-bit Vista virtual machine with Aero disabled that exhibits this same behavior. If you click back into the text editor, is the column indicator repainted?

Clicking back to the text editor doesn't work. I also tried adding a full screen refresh and minimizing/maximizing/restarting VS.NET, no dice.

With the DWM disabled, I never see the column render ever.

This happens on another computer I use as well. Weirdly, if I remote desktop into the machine then the column always renders even with the DWM disabled.

So far I cannot reproduce the problem using Vista 32bit and VS 2005.

Can you please go to:

VA Options -> System Info -> Copy Info

and paste the details (from the clipboard) into your reply. This will give us the basic information about your setup.

*sigh* I am not seeing anything odd or unusual here. Are you running 32bit or 64bit Vista?

Do you see this problem even when other programs are not running?
Do you have any other IDE plugin's installed?

The IDE does have an inbuilt feature to do something similar, which is described here:

http://blogs.msdn.com/vcblog/archive/2007/08/03/testing-compiler-diagnostics-and-a-cool-ide-tip.aspx

about half way down the page. You may find that this is more reliable for you.

I like the VS.NET version better, it supports multiple guides. Pretty neat. Plus it works with DWM disabled for me. :)

Both systems I'm using are vista 32 btw.

Sounds like the IDE is the solution then I have no idea why VA is having problems, so far I have not been able to reproduce this problem.
