Even if all open files are already saved, doing "close all but this" or "close all windows" causes a delay of a few seconds with VA enabled. I am talking 5-10 open files only, not 50-100 or anything dramatic.
What exactly is happening to cause this?

Which IDE and version of VA are you using?
Are you seeing a spike in CPU usage when this delay happens?

I am not seeing any such problem here with VA 1837 and VS2008.

VS2008 standard, VA 10.6.1833.

I see a spike on all 4 cores from 25-50% (0% before and after)

Can you please try capturing a mini-dump file of this short hang? I know this will be tricky, but a few second should be enough to use "break all" in the second, attached IDE. You can learn more about how to do this:

If the hang is way too short, assigning a keyboard shortcut to "break all" or using the toolbar icon might help. If it doesn't, we will try other approaches to hunt down this problem.

If you are still trying to catch a mini dump here, use procdump as explained in the FAQ, and use the switches to capture a mini dump when a CPU spike occurs. You can set the size and duration of the CPU spike that will trigger the mini dump.
