It is good that this fixed the problem, but we need to try and find what caused the problem. When you install a new version of VA this triggers a rebuild of VA's symbol database. Since you have seen this crash on several different builds of VA something must be happening, fairly often, to cause problems.

Do you run more than one IDE at once? If so is this common? Rare? Is it the same IDE or different IDE's?

What anti-virus software are you using? Very occasionally I see reports of interaction problems between Anti-virus software and VA.

After I rebuilt the symbol database the hangs and crashes went away so i believe that the issue was related to that. Other than that, nothing had changed on the system in relation to visual studio.

I have the dump files now, thank you for these. I have asked our developers if they have any ideas what is going on here:

case=16264

Do you have any other IDE plugin's installed?
Have you seen this problem with earlier versions of VA?

Since you are seeing it with several versions of VA I am wondering if something else is triggering the crash. Has anything else changed on your system, around the time the crash started happening?

Can you try VA 1635 to see if this makes any difference?

that's because it's supposed to be vscrash.zip, not vzcrash.zp

license.wow911.com/Downloads/vscrash.zip

Sorry about that

I still cannot download the dump files. I added "http://" to the front of the link, and I just get a 404 error.

It is possible that rebuilding VA's symbol database will have fixed this crash. A corrupt symbol database is known to cause problems. Normally you should never have a corrupt symbol database, so if this is happening on a regular basis then we need to find and fix the cause of the corruption.

damnit... i left that last reply there waiting for me to press submit for a few hours...

it does not matter if default intellisense retrieval is on or off.

In the meantime this is what I have done:
1. deleted NCB file (still crashed)
2. rebuilt symbol db
3. flushed VAX files (temp, cache, etc)

I've not crashed after doing 2 and 3, but I've not done much editing either.

apparently the .dmp extension is not liked by my server =)

I included the latest hang I experienced in the zip file for a total of 3 dmp files.

Also, I have Get content from default intellisense turned off currently, I will turn it on and verify.

I am unable to download this second dump file. Is the URL correct?

This line of code, if you turn on:

VA Options -> Advanced -> Listboxes -> Get content from default Intellisense

does this make any difference? If you already have this turned on does turning it off make any difference?

Can you please upgrade to VA 1626, or perhaps VA 1632 - a beta version.

VA 1626 contains some fixes for a couple of different crashes that happened in VA 1624.

Thank you for the dump file. Can you please go to:

VA Options -> System Info -> Copy Info

and paste the details (from the clipboard) into this thread. This will give us the basic information about your setup.
