When installing on a system with VA6 already installed, it just went and installed over top, without asking. The splash screen indicates that VA6 is in use, but the Customize item shows that it is not. Disabling this and re-registering VA6 makes this come back. Installer should check if Va6 is already installed, and if so, offer option to replace/upgrade. In addition, installer should ask for which product (Vs6, 7.0, 7.1, etc) should be installed for, not just blithfully do it for all. |

Your observation is correct. VA X installs for VC++ and VS.NET without asking. We never imagined one would want to run VA X in one IDE and one of our older products in the other. During the beta that might make sense. Not sure it does after most of the bugs are gone.
The splash that appears in VC++ after you install VA X is old. We need to update it to say VA X. Not sure why that wasn't obvious to us. I guess after you see something a thousand times...
We believe you can run VA 6.0 as you discovered. Unregister VA X in Tools|Customize|Add-ins. Browse and register VAssist.dll from the VA 6.0 installation directory. (We will call this an unsupported setup. We will spend our time fixing problems that keep you from using VA X everywhere.)

I assume, based on the above statement, that the upgrade from VA6 or VA7 will be to a single VA-X license, usable in both. This has interesting license and purchase issues, of course. As for not wanting to use the product in one IDE vs another, VS6 is the primary stable IDE, and production is being done with it; installing any beta software that upsets that is an issue. In any case, checking for the platform and asking the user the choice is considered good user interface design. |

Your assumption is correct.
The upgrade to VA X is free for the IDEs in which you are already licensed. If you own both VA.NET 7.1 and VA 6.0, you get to use VA X in both IDEs.

You make a valid point about installing a beta into an otherwise stable IDE. Try the manual loading of VA 6.0. Though okay, you will have to redo the procedure on each install of VA X unless we change our installer. We will consider the change. Though easy at the UI level, we need to review the rest of our product to make sure nothing breaks during the process.
Of course, your other option is to wait until VA X is out of beta. |

What about the cases where someone has both VC6 and VS.NET installed, but only has VA licensed for one platform (who would torture themselves like that, I don't know)? What happens when they install VA X?
