I'm using build 1215 and Visual Studio 6.0 SP5 on Windows XP, fully updated.
The incremental search facility (CTRL-I) sometimes fails to work after VAX was installed. It shows shortly in the status bar and then dissapears again.
Any ideas why this might happen? |

Hi Tomato guys,
Just downloaded and installed build 1216 and incremental search still fails sporadically. Cannot seem to find any pattern in it. |

I was about to report, that incremental search again doesn't work in 1219. Just to make sure it's VA X I disabled it, but search still didn't work. Started customization, to make sure Ctrl+I isn't binded to something else, but it was correctly assigned to SearchIncremental. But what's interesting - after closing customization dialog search started to work, both with VA X enabled and disabled. Maybe it has something to do with reseting of keyboard binding performed by VA X after installing the new build? I'm using VS 6.0. |

We believe we have the reproducible case where incremental search doesn't work in VC++ 6.0. You are welcome to confirm. We are working on a fix.
startup msdev make the workspace window floating select the file view close msdev start msdev open project inc search doesn't work click each and every workspace window tab inc search works
No problem if the VA View is the last workspace window open when you close VC++ 6.0. |

I cannot confirm your case, because I don't want to touch window layout. It's very difficult to achieve the following layout in VS 6.0:
Note that source control toolbar is under the workspace windows, and wndtabs is at the same level. Now getting back to the subject, incremental search sometimes is broken after starting msdev, but as soon as it starts to work, it works without problems. One thing is sure - my workspace window has never been floating. |

What is incremental search supposed to do? It has never done anything useful for me or maybe I just don't know how to use it. |

Cezariusz: We will fix the problem we can reproduce. Odds are it will fix things for you. Symptoms are fairly similar.
Dirt: We find people either love or hate Incremental Search. Find info in the IDE documentation. Type Ctrl+i and a few letters. The next string containing the letters is highlighted. Type another letter to continue search. ESC to quit the exercise. |

Thanks, I can see why some people hate it. |

Thanks guys, seems much more stable now. I've used incremental search for at least 10 years, so it would be hard to give it up ;-) |
