and sometimes random cursor movement when I start typing after running a build. Sourcesafes difference just makes some wierd mistakes, pointing to lines that arent different and not pointing to those that are. I only point this out because it only started happening after i installed vax 1233.
running .net 2003, Sn systems VSI.net and VAX, nothing else.

Hello Dinky,

Thankfully I haven't noticed the behaviour you've mentioned. I'd like to draw your attention to two little things (which I hope will ease up your life a tiny bit).

1. In my company, we experienced some trouble with the integration of Visual SourceSafe (with both VisualStudio6 and VisualStudio.Net, but especially with the latter). Please check that you use the latest version of Visual SourceSafe (currently version 6.0d).
2. In Visual SourceSafe there is a setting that includes or excludes the difference between spaces and tabs, while it detemines if two lines are different. So for example "<space><space><space><space>Test" can be different from "<tab>Test". (I dislike this difference myself, so I've set this setting to ignore those differences.)

I hope for all of us that the (other) effects you describe are resolved quickly. Can anyone reproduce any of these effects?
Dinky, thanks for pointing this out (if it really is a Visual Assist thing).

With kind regards,
Patrick Luja

Offhand, we can't think of anything in VA X that would make Sourcesafe diffs fail. When the problem happens again, try disabling VA X (either with our menu item or with Tools|Add-in Manager) and rerun the diff. See if the disabling makes a difference (pun.)

Sadly, it doesn't work - at least, it's never worked on any project I've ever been on.

VSS is, IMHO, an extremely buggy product. We just had an issue where a "Get Latest Version" didn't overwrite an older version (which caused us to ship a broken version). No good reason for it; it just plain failed.

Never had any problems with VSS. Using multiple checkouts, various versions at the same time, branches etc. Occasionally it corrupts the database (without loosing data), so its a good idea to have an scheduled integrity check.

One of the main tricks is to use "Compare files by 'Content'" in Options|Local Files, neither time nor checksum works well.
Also use "Set time on local files 'Modification'" instead of default. And update to the latest available version. And have it ask for any replacement, just in case... And, dont forget your prayer in the evening.

Hello all,

Indeed, I feel the same way. Although all things are going resonably well nowadays (maybe we have learned to cope with the bugs).

If one is wondering where to find the settings of the white space differences; press shift while selecting a compare files. A dialog pops up; in the advance properties (I think; I'm at home now without VSS, so I'm doing this from my - leaky - memory) you can select an option to ignore the white space differences.

BTW: I second the thought of support that it's unlikely that VA X is the culprit here.

The fact that Microsoft doesn't use VSS for its big projects says it all.

FWIW, we use SourceGear Vault. We have had some problems with "lost" check-ins, but they're supposedly fixed in version 2.0, which we've just installed. The big win for us was the speed over the network. Previously I couldn't do a diff of two old versions when I was in the UK (the server is in California).

I recommend everyone goes and sees http://vaultthemovie.com/
