Just got this whilst editing a file ...

Error writing to file:
c:\\program files\\visual assist x\\vc7\\cache/ac40.prt
Too many open files

Got it again when I opened Window->Windows... dialog to see how many open files I had. FWIW I had about 40 files open

/Edit/
Closed all but two files and it's still doing it, seemingly random.

This might not be relevant but the main fuse just tripped in the house taking out my pc. This has only happened since restarting after that.

thats very strange. what IDE and version of VA are you running? if you can see the screen shot in this thread:

http://forum.wholetomato.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3722

are you getting the same error message? it sounds like it. can you also try rebuilding your symbol database and clearing the cache? both options are in VA options -> performance. with luck this will help.

Yes that's the one. I restarted devstudio and the problem went away - sorry I should have mentioned that.

If it's of use I'm using DevStudio 2003 (this time - I have to switch between 2005 and 2003) and VA 1413.

Thanks
Rob

ps latest OB beta is looking good...

i have yet to see this error message myself. hopefully it was just a one off *grasping at straws mode*

OB beta? that makes me think of stardock object bar. is that right, or are you referring to some other program?

drifting off topic for a moment have they addressed that very irritating focus bug when using OB to swap back to the 2003 IDE? currently focus goes somewhere, but it is not into the code editor, and you get no caret. swapping tabs gets the caret back again, but who wants to do that?

when i reported it the best answer i could get out of support was "most of our developers only use VC6" *sigh*

No it still does what you describe I'm afraid, although it doesn't bother me since I usually use alt-tab to get back to devstudio. If only stardock fixed bugs as quickly as whole tomato, eh ?

it would be nice to think there were bug fixes in OB2 *sigh*

i often have a rather large number of programs open, so switching via the taskbar is something i regularly want to do. i think i should email them again and see if i can get a better response this time around. thanks for testing this for me

Rob - do you have any 3rd party library directories set in your vs2003 include directory list?

Rob - one more question. When you got the "too many open files" message, did you have more than one instance of VS running?

No, and no (at least I think). Anyway it's not happened since I went to a version after 1409 (can't remember what I'm on anymore)

Ok - one more stab in the dark - do you have Norton AV Corp installed? If so, is auto-protect enabled?

No. No antivirus running. Strangely enough I had the problem again yesterday. I've now installed 1418 and it's been ok so far
