I use a heavily modified dark background-based colour scheme that, if imported into VS2010, prevents the text editor from applying the VAX colours (all other views work fine). Bold and italics are applied just fine.
ReSharper is installed. I only use VAX for C++. Disabling ReSharper does nothing, which leads me to believe it's not an incompatibility with ReSharper.
If I reset the colours to default, the VAX syntax colouring works fine.
If I then import my custom colours again, no dice.
I really want this to work, because there's no way I'm reconfiguring those ~90-95 custom colours, on several computers no less.
Here are two .settings files to compare.

With your colour scheme imported, can you try the following steps and see if they help please:
* Exit VS2008 / VS2005
* Delete this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\VisualStudio\\10.0\\FontAndColors\\Cache\* Restart the IDE
VS2010 will recreate this registry key next time you load it. |

Which OS and version of Resharper are you using?
So far I cannot reproduce this problem under winXP. Can you export you VA settings please, I can then import them as well, and see if this makes any difference:
VA Options -> Performance -> Export Settings

FYI, I'm always curious about dark color schemes, so I tried googly's scheme.
I see the same problem with it as googly does; none of the VA colors display. I also tried changing the settings through the va dialog; none of the changes were seen.
I then went into the VS Options dialog and changed the "VA X ..." color settings (example "VA X Method"). The setting for 'Item foreground' is completely ignored, but the setting for 'Item background' is used.
VS2010 on Win7 Ultimate 64 bit.
I won't be loading the scheme again for more testing; just wanted to report that I saw the same thing as googly when using his scheme.

Very strange, I wonder if the OS is a factor. This is what I am seeing. First with VA syntax colouring enabled:
and then with VA's syntax colouring disabled, via:
VA Options -> Advanced -> Fonts and Colors -> Enable Enhanced Syntax Coloring
so VA is clearly having an effect here. |

| Its not as simple as the OS. I have now imported the problems settings file into VS2010 under Windows 7 64bit, and VA syntax colouring is still being applied correctly for me. |

I installed the 1856 trial on my home machine too, which is pretty much the same setup, and it worked fine there, so it's not just because of Win7 Ultimate x64. We bought a license anyway, because just Extract Method on itself is worth 250 bucks.

This machine does still have VS2008 SP1 installed as well (my home machine doesn't), but VAX is not installed in that (since we're moving over to VS2010 now). I do believe I've used a VAX trial in VS2008 like 18 months ago or so, but couldn't find any traces of it on the filesystem or in the registry.

Have you restarted VS2010 since importing the settings?
I have imported your VA settings here, and installed ReSharper. I found I had to restart VS2010 before VA syntax highlighting was being applied correctly to the text editor, but after the restart, it is working correctly for me.
For sending us files, unfortunately no, you cannot attach settings file to forum posts, but you cas submit the files via the form:

Yep, I've restarted like a million times (slight exaggeration). Also rebooted. I even reinstalled VAX several times, probably why the trial stopped working :)
I guess I'm going to have to reinstall Windows? :\\ |

| It's just the foreground colour that doesn't work. If I go into "Fonts and Colors" and change the background colour for, say, "VA X Class", that's reflected just fine in VS. Foreground is ignored. |

Can you please export your complete VA and IDE settings and send them to me:
VA Options -> Performance -> Export Settings
IDE tools menu -> Import and Export Settings -> Export selected environment settings
I can then import them here and see if I can reproduce the problem.

It is possible there is something in your settings that is a factor. Do you know if it is possible to export and import your ReSharper settings? I am not so familiar with ReSharper. |
