We discontinued surrounding on " and ' -- too many problems getting it just right. Though you liked the feature, few others did. We do not expect to resurrect the feature any time soon.

I liked this feature too. I thought that it worked good. You never can make everything right, but it helped!

I'm surprised that you liked that feature. When did you ever have a bare word that you wanted to turn into a string, or vice versa?

Personally, I don't like surround selection on parenthesis either. It's too common to select something, and try and overwrite it with something starting with a parenthesis, which doesn't do the right thing. I wouldn't mind losing parenthesis, or making surround selection only work on whole lines not parts of lines: but I expect other people would disagree with me here.

Of course, the WT team could make it so that we could turn each surround selection character on and off individually, but it's perhaps a bit too much option bloat.

Here is the previous thread on this topic, by the way: http://forum.wholetomato.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=787

Surrounding selection with parenthesis is an awesome feature! I hope very much that you do not
intend to remove it.
For those who don't like this feature it can be easily disabled. Why remove a feature which,
if I'm not wrong, it isn't even on by default?

Don't worry. I said that I didn't like it, but I don't think it should be removed because other people wouldn't agree with me. Or did you think I was an employee of Whole Tomato because I'm a "Tomato Guru"? -- that only means I spend too much time in these forums!

It can't be disabled by people who don't like it, though. Not without also disabling surround selection on comments and braces, which I use a lot.

PS I'd still be interested to know in what circumstances people found surround-on-quotes useful. Just for my own curiosity, you understand.

Stephen's assumption is correct. We don't have separate options for surrounding of {, (, ... to avoid option bloat.

Press UNDO when surrounding is not what you intended.
