Hi there,

first of all, my configuration:

VA_X.dll file version 10.2.1438.0 built 2005.12.16
Licensed to:
VA X: ******* (1-user license) Support ends 2007.01.19
VAOpsWin.dll version 1.3.1.9
VATE.dll version 1.0.4.11
MSDev.exe version 6.0.9782.2
Devshl.dll version 6.0.9782.0
Devedit.pkg version 6.0.9782.0
Font: Lucida Console 11(Pixels)
Comctl32.dll version 5.81.4916.400
WindowsNT 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 4
Single processor

Platform: Win32 (x86)

As you can see I'm still using VStudio 6.0, current SP.
When I try to shutdown VS, it often happens, that VS hangs, consuming all CPU-power it can get. Sometimes I'm able to see the line/column display at the bottom of the IDE, which in this case flickers horribly.
It might happen (haven't been able to verify this), that not all files are saved correctly when this happens.

I had been very happy to find out about VA-X and encouraged our purchasing department to get me a licence. I hope I don't have to regret it.

Regards,
Pelle.

P.S.: edited to remove e-Mail from license-information

do you get this problem if you simply load VC6 and then quit it without opening any code? VA should work fine with VC6, and certainly should not do this.

do you have any other plugin's installed? are you able to get a call stack from this locked IDE?

Hi there,

I've found out that the problem depends on the code/project loaded. I don't get this problem on a small sample project nor without any project loaded.

I am running an evaluation of "Workspace Wizard", which I'll probably deinstall anyway. I'm not too impressed by that tool.

Regards,
Pelle.

Just uninstalled Workspace Wiz, but the problem persists.

After upgrading to Version

VA_X.dll file version 10.2.1440.0 built 2006.01.17
Licensed to:
VA X: ******* (1-user license) Support ends 2007.01.19
VAOpsWin.dll version 1.3.2.0
VATE.dll version 1.0.4.12
MSDev.exe version 6.0.9782.2
Devshl.dll version 6.0.9782.0
Devedit.pkg version 6.0.9782.0
Font: Lucida Console 11(Pixels)
Comctl32.dll version 5.81.4916.400
WindowsNT 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 4
Single processor

Platform: Win32 (x86)

the problem is slightly different. It's still that the IDE hangs once I close the related project, but the row/column field is no longer affected. Instead, the workspace turns to background-colour and is irresponsive. However, it's new that the workspace can be closed by clicking the hourglass on the 'x' button of the IDE-window.

Hope this helps.
I could send a va.log if required.

Regards,
Pelle.

...
one more thing to add some precision to the topic:
The problem actually happens if the command "close all windows" is executed. The project needn't be closed for the problem to appear.

Pelle.

I've meanwhile experienced the flickering again and could even mail an AVI of the described effect if required. However I can't see anything explaining the effect, but only proof of what I've seen.

can you try and get a call stack of the hung IDE please?

is there anything "odd" about the project that has this problem? it is possible this is related to the number of files in the project, do you have a ruff estimate of how many files it contains?

Hi there,

after closing all windows I attached another MS-VS to the hung IDE and pushed pause on the debug. The callstack-window only displayed this:

USER32! 77e31eb3()
WINMM! 77545c36()
KERNEL32! 77e7b388()

I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. If you have another method of retrieving the callstack in mind, please let me know. As there's no exception, I have no other idea at the moment.

The project is pretty normal for all I can say. It's a DLL-project which I suppose has roughly 2.5MB Sourcecode distributed over very roughly estimated 80 files. The biggest file has somewhat 750kB size and is a bit "too large" compared to all the others. However it's nothing extraordinary.

Thanks for your help,
regards,
Pelle.

Ah, now...
this looks a lot more interesting. After leaving WinDbg alone for quite a while it displayed the following:

Hi again,

one more thing that is probably not related to this problem: If I keep the debugger running while working on my code, I eventually get the following exception, which seems to have no effect to the developing-tasks:

Btw: I just noticed, that my bookmarks (temporary (Ctrl-F2)) are not saved as specified in the settings. Looks like the add-in never gets to the action where these are stored.

Hi there,

just caught a stack of the flickering event. Hope this helps, too.

Your stacks are of normal processing of the message map. We wonder why the IDE is processing messages and not exiting.

Our first guess would be a conflict with another add-in but we don't see any. Can you confirm? (We know you uninstalled WorkSpaceWhiz.)

Can you generate logs to help debug the problem. Include startup.log and va.log. More info at:

Hi there,

good shot, I already forgot about that one! It's a tool that's supposed to save your bookmarks like VAX does.

Here's the source:
Jignesh Patel
jigneshpatel _at_ hotmail.com
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/4411/

I'll uninstall that and see if I can update you with any improvements.

Regards,
Pelle.

Hi again,

I want to express my thanks and my praise for your readiness to deal with problems caused by extraneous software. Everything seems to work fine now and I'm very happy with it.

I might have discovered this myself if it hadn't been that I had installed those two plugins at almost the same time hiding any relations between them.

Once again thank you!
Regards,
Pelle.
