I don't have a 100% specific repro for this, but basically I noticed that when I do a FindInFiles operation and a "hit" exists in a file I have open, the search will hang and never complete. VS still runs OK otherwise, but I cannot do FindInFiles again. Also, if I attempt to close the file it found the "hit" in, VS will hang for good. |

odd. i often do find in files and get a hit on an open file. is it possible for you to get a call stack next time the IDE hangs for good?
do you have any other plugin's installed? any thing "odd" about your system? this does not sound at all familiar to me, which suggests it could be something about your configuration having an effect.
i am not clear on what happens the first time OFIW hangs. does the OFIW dialog remain on the screen? if so how are you able to keep on using the IDE? for me, using VS2003 and VA 1440 the OFIW dialog is modal. |

I've also had this issue. It has existed well before the 14xx versions. I have never been able to find a reproducable case, but now that I think about it. It usually does occurs when it finds a hit in the file I have active. Though it doesn't so the result for that file in the results list all the time.
I have the XDK(x360 sdk) installed, and Incredibuild installed, though I do recall having it with atleast Incredibuild not installed |

| I also have the Xbox 360 SDK installed, but not incredibuild. I will try and get a call stack next time it happens. Unfortunately I don't have symbols for anything so I'm not sure how much use that will be. |

| a log file would probably be more useful, but these can get big quite quickly, making it a poor solution if there is no way of triggering this on demand. |

Hello,
me too had this problem since long time ago and has never been solved even tough with the latest baseline the situation has been improved a lot.
Right now when I have to perform a large find in file I usually disable VAssistX first.

SDKs don't matter in these cases. Add-ins might.
A call stack would certainly help. (Don't bother trying to get a log for something not reproducible.) Use another instance of the IDE to break in an get the stack(s). If you're running the latest build, we'll have the symbols we need.
Obviously, more clues will help. |

| I tried to get a call stack when it hung just recently, but I don't have any symbols for any of the DLLs. Does VAX come with symbols? I don't see any PDB files anywhere. |

| don't worry about not having symbols for VA, support have the symbols, so should be able to make some sense from the call stack. can you post any information you have here, or email it to [email protected] , referencing this thread. |

This is using the IDE's "Find In Files" dialog correct?
If so, it seems in the forthcoming beta that this has been magically resolved. I haven't had any issues using the "Find In Files" |

This is still plaguing me and I'm considering disabling VAX until I can at least figure out a workaround. Any updates here?

Have you tried the latest build 1445?
I'll give 1445 a try later today and give an update.
Though using some internal betas I haven't had the issue at all.
Edit: I've gotten the find-in-files hang a few times using 1445, no IDE hard lock. The IDE hard lock happens less frequent for me.
If its of any help, the project I'm in has just under 2400 files. |

FWIW, I'm seeing this hang in 'Find In Files' from time to time too.. using VAX 1445. Unfortunately I've not managed to get a callstack, as it generally makes my machine unresponsive (it just sits there, allocating all of the memory I have.. so once it runs out it starts caning my drive).

I usually search the entire solution, I very rarely search a project or the current file. |

I got an email about 1515 and have that installed now. I will try it for a while and see if I still get the hang.
One thing I noticed with it is that it renamed my devenv.exe.manifest to devenv.exe.manifest.bak. Why did it do this? By removing the manifest, you get R6034 errors when you try to run the debugger. Why is VAX messing around with devenv in this manner? |

have you done anything "odd" to your system? i have been using 1515 for days now and have had no problems with the debugger at all.
i believe that VA its self delivered the manifest file, but it is now removing it since under certain conditions it can cause problems, e.g. when working with an ImageList.
i am grasping at straws here, since i personally cannot use the call stack, so i am wondering if there is a connection between the R6034 errors and the crashes.
are you running a seperate debugger, or simply debugging from within the IDE? |

The two persons who report this problem, Mindcrime (in his initial post) and rhummer seem to have this in common:
msenv.dll version 2.0.2417.0
We cannot determine the origin of this dll but we suspect it is a culprit.
Can you tell us what you installed that might have included this dll? |

That DLL is in my .NET2003\\Common7\\IDE. and doing a properites on it, the product name as Xbox360. So I guess the X360 SDK installs an updated msenv.dll so you can communicate to the xbox via the ide.
EDit: While searching for that dll it found a backup copy where the X360 is installed with a version number of: 7.10.3077.0

Any chance this could be related to the very bizarre bug in Visual Studio where Find in Files stops working (always returns "No files found to search in") that can be solved by pressing Control + Scroll Lock?
I confess that I thought this problem might be related to Visual Assist, and had been watching this thread to see if there were any mention made of this type of failure. I only just minutes ago discovered the ctrl + scroll lock "fix". It smacks of a bad joke or an easter egg gone bad. |
