This is annoying... because any other character key I hit by mistake, I can backspace out of it. If I type ' in VAX, it automatically adds the trailing '. Then if I hit backspace, it's still there. So I have to do a Del or messy Right Backspace to get rid of it...

Fixing this would be nice! :)

Backspace should delete the ' to the right of the caret, ie the auto-inserted quote. A second backspace should delete the one you typed. Same goes for ", ( and [.

If we understand you correctly, the designed behavior does not occur for you. Instead, we understand backspace does nothing. If this is the case, does the problem occur only with single quote?

Does it occur in all cases? All places in your file? All file types?

What IDE do you have? Is it localized?

If VS.NET, is Bkspce assigned to Edit.DeleteBackwards?

If VC++ 6.0, what emulation is set in Tools|Options|Compatibility?

If we misunderstand you and you prefer VA X not insert an extra quote when you type one, disable "Insert ()..." in the Correction node of our options dialog.

IMHO, I would think that it should go like this:
- user presses ', VAX puts in ''
- if user presses Del, VAX deletes the second quote it added
- if user presses Backspace instead of Del, VAX deletes *both* quotes

This makes sense to me, because whenever I make a typo of one character, hitting backspace once should fix it. With VAX I now have to do it twice, which is frustrating... But I do like the second quote to be added when I do not make a typo, that is a nice feature that I don't want to turn off ;).

I am using VC6 regular english, and yes it occurs everywhere in all cases. Compatibility is set to custom (checkboxes are set to 000100101).

Thanks,

swine

The behavior you describe is what VA X is supposed to do. We understand your argument that one Backspace should remove two characters, but another might argue one Backspace should remove one character.

It's a tough call.

Sounds like a good reason for adding new option...

Please, no! Either version is better than another option!

I disagree strongly. I hate software that simply assumes it knows what's best in matters of opinion like this. Choices are good.

Thats why they came up with checkboxes, then dialogs with lots of checkboxes, dialogs with lots of tabs with checkboxes, then property lists, then tabs with property lists, then... whats next? SQL queries?

Somewhere you have to draw the line and make it a design decision, instead of an option.
